Gang:
In order to make installation and removal of the horizontal stabilizer more mechanic friendly, I am considering a small change to the aft portion of the rear top skin, 6B21-6. I would like to cut off the section aft of the aft bulkhead 6B12-3 and above the stab chord line.
That's kind of hard to visualize, but basically the bottom half of the clearance cut-out for the stab leading edge would remain attached to the rear top skin, and above that it would be cut off even with the aft edge of the aft bulkhead.
I would then replace every other A4 rivet with a flush-set A5 and in-between put 8-32 rivnuts. (There is no room on the heavily crimped bulkhead to install nutplates.) I would fabricate a small cover skin from .025 or .016 which would attach to the rear top skin there with AN525 screws into the rivnuts, and to the saddle 6B21-5 with A4 rivets.
I am guessing that others have also made mods in this area to improve maintainability. I'd like to hear about those and to hear comments about my idea.

Some see the problem and some don't (i.e. they can remove their stab with
the standard cut-out from a single top rear skin).
Nick at the factory admits that some have a problem (private e-mail, Oct,
2006): "You are right, on the Zodiac, the stabilizer cannot be removed
without removing one of the HT attachment brackets 6B1-9 or 6B1-8."
I'm attaching a number of pictures of different solutions. I'll upload these
to the photo archives if none of their owners object.
"1.jpg", "2.jpg" and "3.jpg" are pictures of an unknown plane supplied by
Nick.
Ron Geese has some good shots of his solution. Look at photos 195-198 at his
site. I've attached #198.

Here is Larry McFarland's solution:
"I've included a linked image from when my stabilizer was being fitted and
had much the same problem. I made my saddle reach a bit more to minimize
the tail skin overhang needed to get the stabilizer to slip under and on. I
ink marked nearly 3/8-inch clearance around the nose to get the stab to
fit."

The last three pictures with "saddle" in their name are from Jeff Small
