How much clear coat is needed to do a fox? Its sold only by quart and gallon.

It is my understanding that Polyfiber recommends not using a clear coat. I don't think many people use clear for fabric airplanes. In fact, my friend just had his C182 repainted by a custom shop down in Arizona and they don't clear anything unless the customer really wants it done. They did say that the aircraft finishes are made to be used without clear coat. I think the only place clear is used a lot is when appling a uncatalyzed base coat to say an auto, then clear is absolutely necesary.

Some of the Oshkosh winning composite planes use clear coat to get a
better final finish. They sand the base color coats, particularly at
the seams, then clear coat, then sand and polish the clear coat for a
"perfect" finish, free from blemishes and orange peel. On the down
side I know of at least one case where the plane, a winner, came out
incredibly heavy, partially as a result of all the paint.

I clear coated my cowl and my wings over the wing
tanks. I wanted some protection from spilled fuel.
Results - The cowl looks pretty good yet, but the fuel
got under the clear coat on the wings and I havenīt
found a cleaner that will remove it. Stained wings!
Bottom line for me is that the clear coat really isnīt
worth it.
