I don't know if your idea to "roll your own" is for fun, but I recently purchased a pair of Xenarc X1010 fog/driving lights from suvlights.com. These use D1S bulbs. They come with the diffuser installed for fogs, but this can be easily removed (instructions on the web site) to make one fog and one driving light. They are available in both 4250K and 5400K colors as you like. They come set up for wireless remote switching, but can be wired for regular switches if you like. All in all, a fiarly nice set up. Cost is only $348 for a pair with all the wiring, etc.

I haven't installed them yet, but plan is for a leading edge cut-out and plexiglass window. These lights are astoundingly bright if you are used to 4509's!

Can these lights be wired to operate independently?  I.e., turn on one at a time using separate switches?

Do your HID lights from SUVLights.com include any voltage specs? I need 24-28V. Most auto lights are of course 12V. However, rumor has it that some/many HID ballasts work over a wide voltage range (i.e. 12-30V). Just curious. I’d buy the same ones you have if they’d work with 24-28V.

I know exactly what you need... Did you get by the Preciseflight booth at SNF, they have 12 and 24v HID's. In fact, in the case of the Legacy, they even make ones that fit exactly in the wing mount. Mine are on the way Smile... Now, they aren't cheap like Auto ones, but I wanted 24V and have found them only a handful of places...

I did get the Show special at least...

I remember that someone (maybe more than one) opted to use the Hella Micro DE HID Driving lights for their aircraft.  I was wondering if you could give us some feedback on how that lighting system has worked for you.  Do they output enough light to be effective?

According to the Hella web site

the DE type of lamp assembly has an elliptical reflector. A proper landing light would use a parabolic reflector. The significant difference is where the lamp’s image, or hot spot, is focussed.

An ellipsoidal reflector has a pair of foci, with the lamp’s hot spot located at the first focus, and the second focus somewhere in front of the reflector, how far in front is a property of the elliptical curve chosen for the reflector. At any distance beyond the second focus the beam diverges at an angle determined by the ellipsoidal curve. Hella does not specify where the second focus is located but does say that the assembly is suitable for automotive low beams or fog lights. That sounds more like a taxi light to me.

A paraboloid can be considered as a special case of an ellipsoid, with the second focus at infinity. In practice this simply means that the beam projected from the lamp assembly does not converge at any point but is more or less a “pencil beam” out to infinity. Think: searchlight. Since there are imperfections in the optical system the beam in fact diverges slightly making the paraboloid suitable for illuminating the width of the runway. The divergance of the paraboloidal system is usually less than of the ellipsoidal system beyond its second focus. The importance of divergance is in how much light intensity is projected to where you want it. The broader the beam the dimmer the spot illuminated.

While Hella identifies the Micro DE Xenon as usiong a true xenon lamp, the description at rallylights.com claims the lamp’s “light is near the color of daylight, about 4000 degrees (sic) K.“ The color temperature of daylight and xenon lamps is 6000K, and tungstem lamps are around 3200K so either the folks at rallylights.com are selling tungsten halogen at the price of xenon or they just made a mistake. Here’s where “trust but verify” is appropriate if buying from these folks.

Please note that there's two different Micro-DE versions. One is just an ordinary lamp, the other is Xenon. We have integrated the Xenon-DE in our Rans S6S cowl. Pictures available as soon as the paintjob is ready. I can tell you that the light is just as white as any other Xenon car headlight.

That certainly confirms that the product is indeed xenon, and that the web site just shows the wrong color temperature for the product.

Absolutely. They are independent systems. Regarding the voltage, maybe
Andy could give the voltage specs from the ballast, since many I have
seen can accommodate a range above 24 volts. Andy - do you know the beam
dispersion with and without the fog lens?? The website didn't specify.
