RED STAR PILOTS !!!

Oshkosh is 2 months away !!

The event is posted on the web site and I am emailing details to the
Yak-list. Spread the news. Whoever does the e-comms may copy and
also put in the news letter.

Oshkosh Airventure starts Monday 7-23 and runs until Sunday 7-29
http://www.airventure.org/

Red Stars will gather at Manitowoc starting the weekend before -
Friday 7-20, Saturday 7-21, Sunday 7-22.
We will base out of the EAA hanger at MTW. They have allowed us to
use it for the last few years.
Jim "Pappy" Goolsby will be leading the mass formation practice out
of MTW. The plan is to not have as much activity in MTW after
airventure begins in OSH. I anticipate that a group will stay in MTW
during the week due to hotel availability. They will gather and come
to OSH in the morning and return to MTW after the airshow or in the
afternoons. Lets try to stay together - MTW for the weekend then OSH
by Monday.

During the week we will depart MTW and recover in OSH for the warbird
briefings. then fly in the warbird portion of the airshow. Any Yaks/
CJs based in OSH for the week can gather for EAAs warbird briefing
(new pilots) and the Red Star briefing just northwest of the warbird
tower/building. The larger our numbers grow and the quality formation
work we do will help to get lower altitudes and more regognition for
the airshow.

Some guys will recover at OSH - some will recover at MTW.

RV
IF ANYONE WANTS TO USE THE RV SPOT IN THE WARBIRD AREA LET ME
KNOW!!! I need to know if we wil have a RV here to let Bill Fischer
at EAA know our plans. If you want to bring an RV contact me off
list. FIrst one to commit gets it. The RV needs to be parked there
on Saturday 7-21 at the latest. Water and electricity available.
Sewer dump comes around a couple of times per week. LET ME KNOW ASAP
if you can / want to bring an RV. If you want to rent an RV locally
and have it set up on the site I can arrange. IT BE YOUR COST FOR
THE WEEK. I rented one 2 years ago and last year borrowed one. If
no one brings or rents an RV for the week, I will get a larger and
nicer vendor tent. We can set up a rent-a-tent for the week for
briefings, hang out, etc. I can get a heavier duty vendor type tent
with sidewalls for the site. A tent in the warbird flightline area
again is great to gather, get some shade and a cool drink. Look for
the banners.
Even if you do not plan on flying in the mass formation - come hang out.

AEROBATICS BOX -
The waiver application is into the FAA. The application is the same
as last year - but you never know with the local FSDO. The box will
be over the field at MTW and can be activated with phone call anytime
between 7AM and 9PM local time. Bring your altitude waivers (ACE
card) and have fun!!

SERGEI BORIAK -
Sergei will be here for the week. In the past people have told me
they will fly with him and then not flown during the week. I get him
here and pay his travel based on having at least 6 pilots to fly -
this covers his expenses. This year there will be an event - "SERGEI
BORIAK" on the web site. If you want to fly with Sergei you have to
commit by signing up and the event fee is $100. He will then fly
with you for $150/hour - pay directly to Sergei. If we do not have 6
pilots then I will cancel Sergei. If we have more than 6 I will
refund the extra costs. You only pay the event fee once. Even if
you fly 2 or 3 flights
I already have 2 pilots. We have enough time for more flights with
him this year as he can arrive Friday 7-20 and fly out of MTW. He
will probably stay the whole week in MTW as he may fly in the
afternoon airshows. He will be available thru the week to fly out of
OSH also. It is worth it. I have flown with him several times. You
will have fun and learn more in that hour than you can imagine. He
will suit the flight to your needs - easy beginner stuff like loops
and rolls - to inverted spins, lomchavaks, etc. Some video from 3
years ago.

RODGER MODGLIN DINNER.
I am unsure if the memorial dinner for Rodger's scholarship fund will
be an annual event. I contacted Zoe and Ashley and it sounded like
there will not be a dinner this year. Stay tuned.

FBO
Lakeshore Aviation at MTW. They will coordinate fuel and oil with a
tag system as in the past.
Contact info - Curt Drumm - owner 920-682-0043
Of course Basler and Orion on the field at OSH.

HOTELS -
Heritage Inn - 908 Washington Manitowoc, WI 54220 920-682-8271
Ask for RedStar Pilots rate - about 55$

Holiday Inn - 4601 Calumet Manitowoc, WI 54220 866-270-5110

RENTAL CARS -
U-Save Auto - 1015 South 26th St 920-682-8024
Luloffs - 1401 Washington 920-682-0121
Enterprise - 4611 Expo Dr 920-652-9994

OSH INFO
http://www.airventure.org

COST
The only cost is flying with Sergei if you want to.
And CONTRIBUTE TO THE DRINK KITTY IN MTW.
I will only be available the weekend before (7-20 to 22) and thru
Wednesday on the ground at OSH. If someone parks an RV in the spot -
please work out a drink kitty with them.
If you cannot register on the web site - SEND ME AN EMAIL TO LET ME
KNOW YOU ARE COMING !!
INCLUDE:
Pilot ----
GIB ----
N# -----
Type ----
Wing / Lead / None
Arrival date ----
Sergei - Yes / No ?
Preferred Oil ---

DON'T FORGET -
FAA is at OSH and there are special requirements to fly in the airshow.
Bring the necessary documents !!!

Looking forward to seeing you there -

Just a thought, everyone from the Southeast I know will be based at OSH like
last year, and it made for a much more enjoyable Airventure. I would
encourage all that are flying a MTW before OSH to consider basing at OSH for
the show.

Two Major Reasons -

- Your happiness - you can relax before and after the show, and might
actually get to enjoy it.. Costs - fuel flying back and forth , stress of
making the briefings, etc..

- The RedStar Association - we made a very good impression on the organizers
this year at Sun-n-Fun by bringing a lot of planes, and FLYING a lot of
planes. If we are going to continue to gain credibility , we need all the
planes we have. Plus, we are going to have the CJ deal next year, and it
will be a good practice to have the logistics working out.

- Lastly, mass briefings - at SnF 07' , we found some success in a changed
briefing schedule - We have started having a early morning brief ( everyone
), then a short brief after the 'airshow brief' closer to our time to fly.
This has allowed for more planning, discussion , and less rush to the
planes. Thus, if someone is flying in the show, they will need to get up
even earlier now, in order to make the show. Then we know how many, what we
are flying, well prior to the airshow brief, and the flight.
Just some thoughts, looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Charlie Lynch, Steve Dalton and I are basing out of OSH for the complete
week. However, we may make a short day trip to MTW to enjoy Sergei and the
box.

I'd like some guidance on housing at OSH. MTW is convenient in this respect. Where are the OSHers planning to sleep? ...Blitz

Several small groups ( 3-5 each) have found a lot of success renting houses for the week. Bill Walker might even know of another house that is available.

I second that motion. The WB picnic is a real treat and takes place Sunday night BEFORE OSH starts. If dinner or event is planned at MTW, I'd like to attend and can offer the trade of a bed at the dorms for one night during the week in a Manitowoc spare bed for that WB picnic night on Sunday.

Having just filed today for early Social Security, I are now ethnic wealthy :>)
