Ok, it's an old thread, and I'm sure many will wave it off as "been there, done that", but, yesterday, I joined the 10K Club. Of course, with a 912ULS on my MkIIIc, it's not too difficult. I maintained about 600fpm ascent rate, and I started when I was at about 4000 ft, so it only took me 10 minutes to get up there. As you can see from the picture, I was still climbing, too!

The field I was flying out of (7R9) is at 20' MSL, and after my flight I realized I had my baro. press. set wrong, so I actually got to 10230 MSL or 10210 AGL. The view of the Gulf of Mexico was spectacular! Air temp at 10K was about 20 degrees F.

The view out the front of the plane... the sliver of land on the left towards the top is the southern end of Galveston Island and San Luis Pass. THe congested area on the right is Freeport, TX.

Robert,

I was interested to see your picture from 10k, I have been there but in a commercial airliner! Can not wait to see that view from the Kolb.

But where is your picture? It was not attached to the message, and i went to the Texas Flyer site, still could not find. Maybe i need a GPS to navigate the web, that might help me!

All kidding aside, would love to see the view, so if you could direct me, i would much appreciate it!

Oooops,...

Robert, forget my last message...

I was replying via the "old mail list" where there was no picture attached. I went to the new forum and saw your great photo! AWESOME... thanks for sharing!

I have to get used to using the new forum, and leave the past behind (old mail list), but only benefit to the old list, is you get to see ALL the posts without going back and forth from string to string... its a bit on the anal side, but i hate to miss anything that happens on the KOLB list!

I think John Jung took his Firestar to over 17,000 ft msl. Makes me shiver
when I think about it.

No, I think it was with a 377.

He will probably respond soon.

That was exactly my thought, several years ago, when I read about a Firestar in Colorado going to 15,800 ASL. But, no, it was a 377. I had a 377 Firestar at the time, and it made me wonder how high mine would go. I never did find out. I made one attempt and gave up at 17k. Decided to get an oxygen supply before trying again. My 503 Firestar II has been to 12k, but it didn't give me the feeling that it could go much higher. Probably just different weather.

There is already enough about this in the archives, so do not archive.

The 503 on a light KXP will get you up to controlled airspace. It helps if you catch a wave over the Cascade mountains.

I've been above 12,000 at least ten times and above 14,000 at least three. I agree with John. If I ever try to get above 14K again I will do it with oxygen.

I just found out that the Global Flyer is going to fly right over Houston.... at 46,000 feet. Maybe I should jump in my Kolb, joing the 46K Club, and wave to him as he zips by at 300 knots! Wink
