I've been experiencing difficult starting. I checked the timing on the
mags and the points open correctly set at -5 deg ATDC (these are M9-35
mags with 36 deg built in timing).
I noted that the left cap had arcing and a lot of carbon. A problem
that I see is that when the mag is timed to fire the #4 plug points
opening, the rotor is still 10 degs BEFORE the #4 wire position in the
cap (I'm guessing this explains the arcing). The right mag is
correctly positioned so the points open AND the rotor points to the #4
plug. Note this is the single finger rotor with the slick start
energizing the P-lead, not the booster coil and dual finger rotor
setup.
Assuming the above is not correct, how do you adjust the rotor postion
on these mags? It seems that I need to KEEP the cam that the points
ride on in the same spot, but shift the rotor. I noted an adjustment
on the lower "bar" that inserts into the rubber drive block, but I
think that will adjust both the cam and the rotor position.

If anyone has an answer, which I wish I did, could you please also post it
to the list? I'm curious what the solution to his problem is.

No.
The rotor moves according to speed. It must be lag the #4 point at
idle and will lead as it advances 35 deg. If you put the rotor at the # 4
pin at static then when it advances 35 degrees when running, it will fire
the # 6 plug!. There are only 40 deg between each spark plug electrode (360
deg / 9 = 40 deg).
Arc tracking and other carbonization inside the rotor cap is usually
caused by other factors. Things like bad coil/capacitor. Moisture in the cap
dirt in the cap etc.

Groups,
I wanted to share what I’ve learned with these M9-35 mags. Please note
these differ from the M9F mags that are typically on the M14P, so the
timing procedure is slightly modified from what Dennis summarized in
the prior email to the Yak list. Many thanks to Dennis and George Coy
for the help! George shared an excellent write up on Russian magnetos.
If anyone would like a copy, please email me and I’ll pass along to
save George the headache.
I summarized George’s emails below:
The M9-35 has mechanical advance mechanism in the magneto. The angle
stamped on the magneto cover is the amount of advance angle (usually 30
to 35 deg). This is the amount the rotor will advance when the shaft
rotates above a certain RPM (I believe it is 600 RPM).
The rotor moves according to speed. It must LAG the #4 point at idle
and will LEAD as it advances 35 deg. If you put the rotor at the # 4
pin at static then when it advances 35 degrees when running, it will
fire the # 6 plug! There are only 40 deg between each spark plug
electrode (360 deg / 9 = 40 deg).
I am not sure the proper angle, but suspect you need to split the
difference. More Lag on the idle would put the finger closer to the
previous cylinder.
As long as the right mag is not used for starting and is off during
start I do not see why it could not be set up with more lag at static
so that the finger could be closer to the pin at the 35 deg advance
point. Of course then someone could exchange mags without realizing the
implications.
