Going through the archives, there still seems to be very little about alternative landing gear. So, I will ask again...! Does anyone have some specific experience to share regarding installing either Grove gear or the composite gear? Speaking of which, I can't actually find Grove gear for the 601 - the sites only seem to list gear for the 701. Specifically, what Grove gear are people installing?
BTW, I spoke with the factory and they said that although they are exploring the composite gear, it is only going to be offered to European customers. Has anyone here actually installed the composite gear from Aircraft Spruce (NK-03A-550 -- 601XL)?
Thanks, Michael in NH

I'm guessing that you spoke to them more recently than I did but a few months ago when the European factory built 601XLs showed up with the composite main gear, I asked the factory about availability of the composite gear for a kit in progress (mine). They told me then that the gear would eventually be available for the 601XL kits but they had no firm timeline.

Michael;
I believe that the gear at ACS is 2 piece. This would be a redesign for the adventuresome, with complicated bending and load transfer considerations.

Michael,
I purchased the Grove Gear for my 601XL QB kit. Grove does not specifically list it on the website but if you call them they can give you a price. The main issue will be the mounting of the gear. I plan on using the original Zenith mounting brackets but I will have to hog out some aluminum saddles to take up the extra space. Aaron Gustafson sent me pictures of his installation on his HD. He drilled a hole in the center of the gear for the attachment of a lateral brace to keep the gear from sliding side to side. The HD mount will not fit the XL but the concept is the same.
I have included pictures of my gear and of Aaron's mounting hardware.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> A couple of years ago, I got mine from CZAW. Nice people to work with. Each gear leg, with wheel and brake, came in at about 12.5 pounds per side. They also sent mounting hardware, which I modified a little to strengthen it to my paranoid specifications. It went pretty well. I haven't drop tested it yet, but expect good results.
