Being an IT Director, I’m very anal when it comes to planning and details. Even more so, when it’s something I personally enjoy.
My approach to “my perfect IFR panel” was to develop a list of requirements that I wanted to see in the solution. My opinion is that it doesn’t necessarily have to be an all in one type of device, but can be a collection of required avionics. (i.e. built in gps versus efis plus GNS 430) Once I get all the requirements defined, then evaluate vendors to see if any don’t meet the requirements. I may even attempt to weight options to see if that may drive one vendor over another.
I’m willing to share my work as well as take input from others in building the requirements matrix. I may even steal some of this from the vendors themselves. If others participate then they can simple adjust the weighting to meet their own personal requirements.
Phase Two would be to develop a list of questions that would drive demo requests at OSH to determine more usability and subjective attributes.
I know this approach isn’t perfect, but it should help reducing the field to a couple vendors, then you can seek out somebody who has the avionics installed and go for a true evaluation. The other main issue is that this evaluation would be just a snap shot in time. However, it may yield a tool that others down the road can use when the products are updated or changed.
If anyone is interested in helping me put this together, please contact me off list.
