I have the Grove gear for my 601XL/TD in the living room, not installed yet. I ordered it from the factory with the gun-drilling and I have to say, "They are a work of art." Especially compared to the factory gear, which is about 15 lbs heavier. They are 4.5" wide and .875 thick across the flat, while the legs are tapered.

They make them with a multi-step process from 7075, which involves cutting the blank and doing the gun-drilling and machining for the axles, annealing and primary bending, 1/2 heat treating, secondary bending, final heat treating and final cold check and touch-up. The fore and aft edges are radiused in the leg part for lower drag without needing full fairings. The factory finish is mill, but I have done a wet sanding pass with 1200 on the legs and am sure they will polish up really nicely.

I also ordered a pair of "radius blocks" from Grove which I will attach to the gear brackets parallel to the centerline, which insure that the gear does not torque load the fuselage and that the gear will deflect straight along the axis when it bends. I plan to use the standard rubber strip and bracket on the bottom.

Finally, the narrower width of the gear means that I will have some leeway in fore-aft positioning to fine tune the take-off and landing characteristics with regard to the final CG location. My plan is to use temporary plywood blocks during the test phase and then replace them with permanent aluminum when done.

I've got no dog in this hunt (thankfully) but let me interject something into this thread. 7075-T651 is NOT a corrosion resistant alloy of aluminum. I would LOVE to save 15# by using one of their gear but cannot see it for something that's going on floats.
Chris made the 601/701/801 from 6061 for several reasons, one of them was it's more corrosion resistant than 2024T3.

7075 is WORSE than 2024T3 in that regard.

Certainly this fact can be mitigated to a certain degree by proper coatings and increased maintenance/inspection. The rear spar fittings on my Glasair have been replaced twice due to intergranular corrosion, I was told (by Glasair) they are 7075t6. Last go-round I welded some up from 4130.
Not trying to talk anyone out of it or throw any rocks at a product, just making a point that someone might not have considered.
