Can someone tell me what the "+To" and "+From" wires from a nav radio
actually do? What data do they send?

I have them on my SL30 and it would seem like it sends data that states
you are TO or FROM a VOR, but I have the same outputs on my GX60 which is
a IFR certified GPS/Comm and I would not expect it on that unit if they
were relating to a VOR.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The wires just drive the the to/from flag on the indicator. The gps will provide virtual vor so the info is used in the same way . The actual info is derived from which side of the vor you are compared with the selected radial. Hope that helps

I guess I need to learn how to use the virtual vor function on my GX60,
but typically don't you have a course in the GPS with an approach
selected? If so, how would a TO/FROM flag work, once you cross the next
waypoint it would just start the next leg of the route and show the next
point?

I know I am ignorant as to how the virtual VOR would work with a GPS
route selected. Or would this function be used just when you don't have
a route selected but just a Virtual VOR selected that you are tracking
to??

Can someone enlighten me? Thanks!

It's my understanding that all GPS navagation is based on to/to. I don't
believe the FAA allows and 'from' navagation in the database.

Hi Mike

If you have your GPS set up for IFR with an external CDI and you put a
waypoint on "hold" you will get a To/From indication on the CDI as you
fly to or from (over) that waypoint.. One example would be holding at an
intersection, you don't want the GPS to cycle to the next route waypoint
so the intersection waypoint goes on "hold" and the To/From will work
just the same as if you were using VOR and holding at a VOR station.
It's in the operators manual and your GX-60 manual is a lot better than
my SL-60 manual!
