Leon,
My 1993 Model IV kit came with the single leaf spring. As you, concerned
with all the talk about tail wheel springs, I switched to the two leaf
spring. I don't recall when, but suppose it was while building as it is
painted white and nicely trimmed. I just came back from a trip to the Brian
Ranch ultralight fly-in near Apple Valley, CA, landing on lots of dirt and
have had lots of off pavement landings in my 870 hours. My worst landing
this trip was at Cameron Park, my home airport in calm wind. To my friends
that were following me, I blamed it on the lack of cross winds which we
found all over the Southern California desert. Actually, I thought I felt a
tug on the rudder a couple of times like a stiff pivot so put it on a block
to grease the tailwheel pivot and the leaf springs looked just like the day
I put them on - the bottom (main) spring opened a gap between it and the
second spring - showing no distortion of either spring element. Because of
all the talk, I examine them pretty carefully from time to time checking
for what might appear as hairline cracking - nothing.
This is one case. I know there have been broken springs, but the two leaf
set-up is not necessarily a problem. That said, I suppose since the springs
are heat treated after forming, likely in a local shop with who knows what
type of quality control, it is possible that there are some variables from
spring to spring.
