I seem to remember seeing instructions for making your crimp pliers somewhere but I don't remember where. Can you tell me where to find them or at least what size rods you used?

I tried that method several different ways and I could never be happy wihtthe results, I also tried seeming plyers from Home Depot, same result very dissapointing.

The best I found and the only one I used after trying the others is the homemade one in the 601 plans. And the price is right to boot! do not archive

I have to second that. I was amazed at how well the simple ZAC tool worked for everthing on the XL. The compound curve on the wigtip was one the scariest first attempts, but it came out perfect. Then my over-confidence got me in trouble on the second one and I scraped one L-angle before getting a good one. But, after doing others in the fuse, wing lockers, etc., with no problem, I see no reason to invest time and/or money for anything else Seems to me the secret is to tweak gradually, back and forth so to speak, because you can always tweak more, but when you tweak too much you might as well alocate the part to the scrap pile - but I guess that probably would apply to any other crimp tool as well. Although they say the guy with the most tools wins, I'll have to concede as a looser in the crimping category.

Just one observation: when you crimp too much, to some extent you can "uncrimp".
In other words, you can reduce the amount of crimp.
I do that by carefully pressing the chosen crimp between two blocks of MDF or by using a hand seamer

I've been very satisfied with a pair of fluting pliers I bought from Aircraft Spruce, and the price is right at $15. Mind you, I didn't have to pay shipping since I live within driving distance of them in Atlanta so I don't know what that adds to the price.
