I seem to recall that at one time there was a main gear axle drilling guide that was being passed around. I'd gladly pay shipping both ways to borrow one.
Thanks!

Tim (or any one else that may be needing it),
Let me know if you haven't located one. I bought one at last year's ZAC Open
House, but don't need it as my Grove gear is pre-drilled for the axles. It
might take me a day or two to find it since it wasn't where I thought it was
this morning.

Check the attached link for a drilling guide for $15 plus shipping.

Tim,
I invested in one of the drilling guides. I also made a template on CAD to optimize the location and rotation of the holes. I used the drilling guide on the first one. It really wasn't that much help and I wound up reaming the guide holes during the process. Therefore, I didn't use the guide on the second one. I just used the template I had made to locate the holes and "eyeballed" it. It worked out just fine. I would be glad to send you the drill guide, but it really is useless. I would also be glad to send you my template, as a pdf if you want.

It is critical that the holes in the landing gear be aligned with the
holes in the axle (that's what a template or 'guide' will get you).
But it is also critical that the holes in the gear are at 90 degrees
to the cross section of the gear. If the holes are not all 'straight
through' the gear the bolts may not all fit and if they do they may
not be straight. If the bolts aren't straight the bolts may not all
fit the axle.
I find that it's difficult to drill a perpendicular hole, free hand, with
a 'regular size' drill bit. One has to keep the bit aligned in two axis.
And I don't think that a tranfer punch will be accurate enough. Once you
put a hole through the gear any other bits that you put through will
follow that path. The gear hole postions have to match the axle holes
within a few thousands of an inch - on both sides of the gear...
I used the axle as a guide, with a bushing to protect it and an 8"
long drill so that I would have something to align the two axis.
(search on 'XL Axle to landing gear' for that thread and more details).
(message #25323 but I don't know how to search on a message id.)
How about using a piece of aluminum or hardwood the same thickness
as the gear to practice? It's not easy to manually drill 4 precisely
placed perpendicular holes through a 3/4" thick landing gear.
I'm not a machinist. I built my kitplane with an electric drill,
hand riveter, electric drill, and a file, oh - snips + a nibbler, too.
I have drilled poorly aligned holes by hand. That's why I figured out
how to align the drill well.

Thanks Jay - Robin sent me his drilling guide. I haven't decided but
I'm considering the approach of using a transfer punch with the guide
and then drilling the holes with a slightly undersize bit (size D) then
reaming them to size. It can't be that critical but when I look at that
big piece of aluminum I don't want to screw up

I drilled the holes with the proper spacing in a peice of one and a half or two inch thick hardwood, on my drill press. This kept the holes 90 degrees, square to the world. I clamped the hardwood to the gear in the proper place and drilled one hole. The hardwood block kept my hand held drill 90 degrees to the gear. In the the first hole I put a bolt through the wood, block and gear. This kept it from moving out of alignment assuring the next holes would be where they belong. Pull the drill out frequently to clear the chips so as not to waller out the holes in the wood block. This worked very well for me and didn't cost a dime.
