Dear Listers,
I am ready to order a GPS for my CH701. My dilemma is what to get. I have reduced the affordable units to three:
- Garmin GPS 296 $1,495
- Lowrance 200C $999
- AvMap EKP-IVC $1,495

Your comments are appreciated. If you have flown with any, please indicate your experience.
Regards,
Ken Arnold

Go Airmap 2000 all the way! I have in the 601 and if it had legs I would marry it! there are various times you can find it on sale for less than $800.00 has terain avoidance, thats a good thing.

I swear by the Avmap, a couple of things to consider, screen size,
bigger is actually better in this case when looking at a moving map.
Make SURE you check out the price of updates, the airmap takes a huge
dive in this issue. Garmin and Avmap have the better terrain and flight
information. But only the New Garmin outweights the Avmap the Garmin 296
is not comparable in value.

I love my Garmin 296 - It is a wonderful unit and easy to use. The 396 with the real time weather capability is a neat unit too. The Garmin has a page that displays basic flight instruments which I used with a safety pilot to fly an instrument approach... not legal but nice to have if everything else on your panel went dark.

From the other responses you can see that it is hard to go wrong. Look at things such as how you want to mount it and antenna and power considerations. Also, do you plan to interface with an autopilot? I know the Garmin will and I would assume the other units do as well.

Ken,
I have a Lowrance 2000c and love it. All are good units but the Lowrance 2000c is so much cheaper than the others that I would get one of those if I were you.

Airmap 2000 hooks up nicely to the Dynon 10 and 100.

Ken,
I went with Lowrance. Your list includes all good products. I spent about a week learning how to use mine, instead of watching TV. The simulator mode is great, you can fly anywhere/anytime and try out all the great inovations before you even get into the aircraft. But check with Aircraft Spruce last, they will beat anyprice that you find. I just called and told them that I could get a better price at "xyz" and the lowered their price.

Juan,

I can't make up my mind about either the Lowrance 2000c or the Avmap. I like
the big screen on the Avmap. Does the 2000c do more?

I also love the Vista Nav but there aren't enough out there yet to know if
they are dependable. I notived the price is really coming down on GPS units.
E-bay has them NEW for much less than most dealers

I've been planning on a 2000C, much because I thought it's 5" screen was the
largest available without spending considerably more. How big is the Avmap
screen?

One under-appreciated feature of the gps docking gizmo is that it takes away the option of manuvering the screen to whatever position/angle suits you best at a given moment. That positiion and angle are subject to change on different flights. A RAM mount arm is much more versatile and if/when you change to a different/newer unit you are not going to be SOL with the old docking station. Also, the RAM mounting arms come in at least three different lengths to sut your desires. It's worth thinking about.

I agreed with Ed.  The sun really beats into the canopy on the 601s and even with the brightest screen you can lose viewing. With the ability to dilt and twist the GPS I can usually overcome the problem, Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Just a note on this. In the currently released Dynon firmware, a bug disables the course selection on the HSI when connected to Lowrance GPS units. The fix will be in the next firmware release. (Soon).

Did Isend you a photo of my panel? I don't think a panel dock could posssibly offer the range of positions and angles that a RAM mount system can provide (I could be wrong of course.... it has happened before). And then what do you do in four or five years when you decide to get a newer and improved-er gps unit? Remove the old panel dock and buy and install a new one when you could just swap the RAM ball over to the new unit? Don'y gry mr wrong here, I do think they look very professional and mucho tidy but the objections I just described are deal killers for me.

Dred

PS: How's your plane coming along? I just started rivetting the forward side skins, main gear mounts etc. The end of the building saga sure seems to be a long way off still.

Ed, this RV-8a is really a strong built airplane, especially compared to my XL. I finally have the fuselage deburred, dimpled, counter sunk, and primed and partially reassembled with clecos. You first assemble,  drill and cleco from front to rear, but then you assemble and rivet rear to front. All this up side down on the jig while the plans are drawn right side up. Confused ?? I stay that way. I plan to start slamming rivets this evening. Hopefully, what little skill I've developed hasn't deteriorated too much in the month and a half since I finished the wings. I need to order the finishing kit from VAN, but I think I'll wait another month or so. I plan to buy the canopy from a fellow named Todd from Florida. The RV guys most all say he has a better product that VAN sells. If you are working on your fuselage you should be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.  It may be sort of tiny, but it's there. I'm a list maker and somewhere during the XL fuselage I was close enough to make a list of what I had left to do to finish and dammed it was great marking through each line as I worked. Have you hung your engine yet ? That really motivated me. Just keep plodding more each day and it'll come together. It really is worth the effort, even though sometimes it's difficult to feel when there seems to be so much left to accomplish. Best regards, Bill of Georgia
