Hello Group:
Does anyone know why the early (Circa 1986) 701 kits had a gross weight of only 960 pounds ?
Thanks,
Damien

The two things that come to mind are the main gear was not as robust and
it was originally spec'd with a Rotax 582 65hp.

Originally, the CH-701 was designed to fit into the
Canadian Ultralight rules. At the time, the max gross
weight for a Canadian Ultrlight was around 960 lbs.
According to the old newsletters I have read, the
prototype CH-701 was designed around the Rotax 503.
With the 503 and the GW limit of 960, the 701 still
had a pretty good useful load.

The current design is a more robust aircraft. as you
may notice, there are several part numbers with the
suffex "SP". These are parts that have been beefed up
to bring the design to 1150 lb gross weight we have
today.

Also, as someone else mentioned, the old landing gear
appears to be considerably lighter duty too.
