Hi Joel,
in addition to Peter's infos:
Our regulations for UL's here in Germany (sould be similar with the FAA)
require the step to be 100 mm (4 inch) aft of the most aft C.G. and the prop
tip min. 300 mm (12 inch) above the water surface on MTOW.
Regards
Hagen

Hagen, that is a very interesting requirement about the distance of the step behind the cg. Haven't heard it before.
A fellow in Australia sent me an interesting article by Frey who was at Edo years ago. It brought out some concepts about step position. Will get this stuff together soon.

Hagen, any chance you could get some background on the reasons for that step position. It is a little different from other rules I've heard.

Hagen:
I take it the 4" for the step is also a minimum to help prevent porpoising on take off.

Noel, where have you been hiding? Haven't heard from you in a long time.
I've started to post some of my float geometry stuff. can link to it from:

More to come. You may be upset because I'm not going to deal with your C of B calc method.

The CG method is just one method... nothing to get upset over. I was quite impressed with your practical approach on your web site. I'm interested in seeing your geometry calculations.
The CG 4" in front of the step is an interesting piece of legislation but I can see if it is a minimum how it would help keep a plane on step from rocking too much.
Property taxes then Insurance..... rain tomorrow... maybe I'll get it all straightened out then.

Nice lay out Peter. I never considered the height of the plane above the float to influence the position of the CG of the plane on the floats but you are right it does.
Keep it coming!
