The only thing I can think is, perhaps to go to places where there is no fuel available?

If you never fly more than 2.5 hours why would even consider the long range tanks? The 12 gallon tanks give you 4+ hours at 5 gph.

Well if the longest he EVER flys is 2.5 hours you'd have to have both his max flight and no available fuel happen on the same flight.
He can always throw some gas cans in the wing lockers.
