For those out there with blue knobs-
What is an appropriate label on the panel (Not on the knob itself) for the prop control- two come to mind "PROP- pull coarse" and "RPM- pull low".
What're y'all using?
Thanks!
Mark

My RV used RPM PUSH INCREASE and my Navion uses PROPELLER PUSH INCR. Seems the other controls all use "Push" type labels too.

Just why would anyone want to label the TPM controls. FAR's suggets color and shape constraints, not labeling. I fought a battle with my AB-DAR on this issue. He could site no FAR that required labeling, just that 'we've always done it'. I have no labels on mine. If you don't know how to use the controls, you shouldn't be flying the airplane.

Color and shape constraints are for identification purposes by touch, but not the operational aspect itself. Labeling tells you what you can do with any given control once it is identified in regards to its purpose.
Example: I observed an Experimenter friend of mine that got a bit exited before his first engine start of a Rotary conversion, and when it fired it went immediately to full throttle, because he was a bit excited/stressed at that instant. Labeling the throttle "may" have prevented that, but I don't know if he had a written checklist for this first engine start, ...the mental checklist failed obviously!
And yes, the pilot should know how to properly use the controls of the craft (s)he commands, but then add some adverse facts to it, and Mr. Murphy, the Lawyer may kick in...

Konrad,
If someone unfamilair with an aircraft starts it without first doing a fairly thorough familiarization, the throttle should be labeled "By the time you take the time to read this, you will be S.O.L."
Labels are for a person familiarizing himself with a craft, not for identifying critical flight controls while burning gas.

Hi Chuck,
I fully agree with you, but my friend made a mistake due to stress (while still on the ground & before even burning gas). He was very familiar with the airplane as he built the whole engine conversation and knew very well were the throttle position should have been for starting. Please re-read my post once more, because I did NEVER said that labeling is very helpful for inflight emergencies, which do come up on occasion...
Cheers,
Konrad
