Not to take away from Dan's experience at the Paris Air Show...very
cool - I'm jealous....but we have something way more impressive going
on right here on US soil. Yesterday at approx. 12:49 local time
every window in Southern California shook from the signature "Boom-
BOOoooom" of yet another Space Shuttle returning to earth. I
couldn't help but let out a yelp and throw my fists in the air as
Atlantis returned to earth.
I wish NASA would do a better job of marketing the Space Shuttle
program so people truly knew and could appreciate just how amazing,
spectacular, and mind boggling this now seemingly routine effort is.
Sending manned flying vehicles to space and returning them safely to
earth is, in my book, the most fascinating feat in aviation.
Cheers,
Barry

Barry,
Unfortunately, people are "used" to seeing the shuttle go up. This is not like the 60's where the entire world watched the space program. We seem not to appreciate the effort and technology that goes into each and every launch. We also do not seem to appreciate the men and women strapping that thing on (being based in Houston, I have the pleasure of thanking the NASA flights that are constantly flying in the area....in fact I spoke to the last Shuttle commander on the radio one night) No one seems to appreciate those holding their breaths in various control rooms around the world. Each and every shot is a success...and worthy of American pride.
Lets not forget that the shuttle was needed to keep the ISS in its orbit while some folks in Russia fixed their computers. Maybe the same computer that runs the engines on the MiG-29!
