I became a test pilot and 797AT became a flying machine last evening. The fist flight (of 12 minutes) was a lot of feeling strange sensations that I was not used to but went well overall and the landing was OK. The second flight this morning was very good from the lessons learned last night and my brain ready to accept the new feels. It trims perfect and no rudder input needed for the kind of turns I've made so far. It felt great this morning! Ya-Hooooo!

I built the cowl. In fact I built it all. The only thing I purchased from
ZAC was the plans and since then have never been in contact w/ them. I do
receive the Zenair newsletter. It also has fabricated metal wing tips where
most buy the fiberglass ones and I layed up the rudder fairing. It was a
good learning experience over all.

Good looking airplane Aaron! I believe the first gull wing canopy that
I've ever seen that
was uncluttered looking. Nice job!

Aaron,

Congradulations. What a thrill that must have been.

Now that you have had a chance to test it out, give us a report on the performance of the Grove gear. How did it feel compared to what you have been flying? How would you classify it? Firm? Springy?

Bob and all

I will report perfomance figures when I get it all sorted out. As far as the
Grove gear, I rode in one just like mine with the stock gear and this one
rides much better. It is designed for 1220 gross and I am flying at just
over 1000 so far so we'll see when we get a heavier load. I am using a not
too smooth grass strip now. Speed seems to be what I had hoped for at 90-95
MPH at 1800 RPM (0-200 Cont.) Still have to check the ASI though.

Last week, after almost four years, my Zenith 601xl flew for the first time{with Bill Clapp at the controls}.You could say I built this plane all by myself, with a few minor exceptions.

First, I never could have done this with out the help from Zenith Aircraft. Over four years I easily called the factory an average of four times a week. There were three or four times, that I called that many times in a day. Everyone at the factory went out of there way to help me, and to make sure I understood exactly how things were to be done.

Second, I installed a Corvair engine in the plane, but only with hours of help from William Wynne[flycorvair.com] and Gus Warren [flywithgus.com]. They also gave me the leadership to do the firewall foreword part of the installation.

I guess, when you think about it, I really built this plane with a whole lot of help.

Congratulations Charles …. And Zenith …. And William Wynne …. There could not be a better story of support from our vendors. I am so glad that Chris was not satisfied building just a small part on a large airplane, but rather needed to design and build the complete machine.
