Last week I returned from a 6161-mile trip in my 2200 Jabiru-powered
Kitfox, with nary a problem with the engine. The only smattering of a
problem with the plane was a loosening of the friction device that
holds the flaperon setting.
Some of you may recall that I changed rocker arm bushings back in May
of this year. After the bushing change, I flew 15 hours and checked
the valve clearance again, knowing that the break-in of the new
bushings would result in a valve clearance adjustment. I did this,
flew a few more hours, and then left May 28th for the Hondo, TX EAA
fly-in, and then on to California. The only thing I had to do to the
engine was to change oil and filter while out there. It took me about
36 flying hours to get there (not a direct route) and just over 18
hours to fly back...gotta love those tailwinds!
Now that I'm back, I will have a look at the bushings just to see how
the wear pattern is progressing, and re-check the valve
clearances...I don't expect to see anything unusual.
