ELT signals should be picked up pretty quickly, no? Then all you have
to do is triangulate, send a heli, and you're done. Right? What am I
missing?

The good news is (A) he will recover and (B) the wings stayed on.

The only explanation I can think of is that the pilot/builder must have used green scotchbrite. The stuff has been rumored to drastically slow down the broadcast signal from ELTs.

Maybe not a dumb question...let's just call it uninformed. Assuming the ELT triggered (which is not always the case), it takes a while to mobilize a search and rescue team. Then triangulation takes time....ELT's are not as easy and swift as finding something via a GPS. And from the air, planes are not always easily visible especially in dense foliage (which is why my plane will be painted a BRIGHT color). And that assumes the weather was above minimums for air rescue. Then comes access to the site for the ground pounders, which can often be a problem, even after they know where they are. believe me....50 hours can go by in a snap. According to FAA Registration this was a 601XL built by John FrewIII and regestered to John Anderson of Alabama.. It has a LYC 0-235-C2C. Pilot was Dennis Steinbock of Oregon. Airworthiness certificate issued 2-2007.

Sounds like another good reason to install the next generation of ELTs.
Aside from the satellite location being tighter (25 square nm vs. 500 square
nm) the higher power pulsed output is more likely to punch through a foliage
canopy:
"Unlike the 121.50Mhz ELT, which transmits a continuous 100mW signal, the
406Mhz ELT transmits a whopping five watts for every 50 seconds for one-half
second. Because the system isn't always transmitting, battery life is fairly
long. Transmitting in short bursts allows the satellite to track up to 90
ELTs at once."

Ed, 50 hours in a plane over Mississippi without refueling has to be a record. Call Guinness. Glad he wasn't hurt much. How would you get a 601 out of a tree ? Without hurting the tree ? Best regards, Bill

Maybe we should carry rope ladders for climbing down from trees when we land in them along with our hammers for busting out the canopy in case we flip over and ballistic parachutes in case the fan stops turning or the wings fall off and add a couple more fuel pumps just in case we have vapor lock, and a survival pack with food, water and tent in case we are forced down in the "wilderness," and life preservers in case we come down in a lake. Where is this all going ? I'm almost too scared to fly my XL now. Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Call Guiness???? The book people or the beer people?
How to get a 701 out of a tree.... get a Kitfox to go up the tree. They are natural enemies so the injured 701 will have no option other than to come down on its own. Then burn down the tree to eliminate the natural enemy of the 701.
Got the stabilizer mounted last night (see photo). Next big issue is how to get the cutout done right where the nose of the stab fits against the aft edge of the rear top skin. Any hints?

Ed,
I made a rough template out of bristol board (about the same as manila folder material) and fine tuned it by adding strips of masking tape to fit the curve. I transferred this to the rear top skin and made the cut. It fit the stab leading edge perfectly. I removed the stab and later riveted the rear top skin in place. Still later, I tried to reinstall the stab - and I couldn't get it in the beautifully coped rear edge of the rear top skin. I had already riveted the stab attach brackets in place and that caused the conflict. I had to trim off that masterful rear edge of the top skin, and make an aluminum filler that could be attached with screws and plate nuts after the stab is in place.
Some posters (and ZAC) have said that this is not a problem. Just watch out!

Yep Jay. This is a concept that dentists are acutely aware of. It's called path of insertion; we deal with it all the time on bridegework. The dirty little secret is that the geometry of the stab attach brackets will not allow the removal of the stab in any direction other than up or forward. Since the rear top skin must fit very closely to the nose of the stab, forward movement is out of the question. Since no one wants to drill out the rivets holding the rear top skin or the stab brackets, the only direction left for the stab is straight up. So if the rear top skin is cut to curve over the nose of the stab you're screwed; it is on forever and can't be removed short of major surgery. What you had to do is the only way I can see other than making a fairly sloppy cut with a lot of gap over the stab.
Therefore unless someone comes forward with a miracle solution, I'm going ot make a very close fitting cut where the rear top skin fits under the nose of the stab but from where it contacts the leading edge, the skin will be cut almost straight upward. I will make a piece of .016 to connect from there back to the rudder fairing. that piece will rivet to the rudder fairing and screw to nutplates at the rear top skin.
BTW I assume we have to make some sort of L brackets to secure the rudder fairing to the top of the stab with nutplates but I haven't seen any instructions regarding that. Have you? I'm sure they're written somewhere, but where?
Got enough rain yet?
Ed

Ed, if I remember you rivet pieces of "L" angle on the top of the stab that fit inside the fiberglass cover. I built by the plans and rivetted the cover down under the turtdle deck skin and to the brackets. When at annual I needed to see inside there to inspect so I drilled out the rivets and reinstalled with nutplates. Would have been a lot easier before I painted, Best regards, Bill
