Has anyone replaced a 6-inch MATCO tailwheel with a homebuilders tailwheel ? What's the bearing situation with this combination?

tnx,

Clem,

I haven't done it with the Matco. I changed out the whole thing. The only
thing you might have an issue with is the axle diameter and the bearings.
The bearings that come with the wheel are not sealed and will eventually
start making a noise of their own. In fact the sealed bearings that
Aircraft Spruce sells as replacement bearings have an inner diameter that is
too large for the Homebuilders wheel assembly - I've yet to figure that one
out.

The homebuilders wheel has a 1/2" axle. I think the replacement bearings
have a 5/8" inner diameter.

If your Matco has a 1/2" axle you would be good to go. Unless there is
something I am not aware of that is perticular to your wheel assembly.

What you might try is getting the wheel, check out the bearing size and if
it needs a different inner size or if you want to just start with a sealed
bearing from the get-go, go to http://www.bocabearings.com/ , use their
bearing finder and order a pair that will fit and are sealed. The ones I
bought are R1621-2RSNR .
They're not cheap ~ $17each, but the wheel is good for sound reduction and
the bearings should pretty much last a lifetime. You will need bearings
with the snap ring as the wheel hub is machined straight through without
shoulders to retain the bearings..
