I find that when I turn my strobes or nav lights on I get noise through my
headsets! Is there some kind of noise filter I can install or is there
something else I should be looking for. Can anyone help me with this
problem?

Ray,
Check the AeroElectric Matronics List archive. This subject
has been addressed many times there. I'd also check the RV archives
if you haven't already.

Ray: Is this new or have you always had the noise?
I'm not a radio expert and we have some on the list who will know alot more than me, but I'll take a shot. If noise has always been there, I suspect you have some insufficiently shielded wire in your radio set-up. When I was wiring mine, I'd heard alot about radio interference from ignition and strobes so was careful to use shielded wire for all radio connections. Also I used braided copper shielding on all strobe wiring and any ignition related wiring on the cabin side of the firewall. Must have done something right because I've had no problems with the kind of noise you're experiencing.
If noise is new-out-of-the-blue, I haven't a clue. How about it radio-heads?

Ray, as Marco said -is this something that’s been present all the time?
A real important question.
What kind of engine do you have, as well intercom and radio.
From your limited information about the setup, I think this is a grounding
problem of your PMG(permanent magnet generator) or generator setup.
This because you said that the NAV light create (same?) noise similar as
the strobes do when switched on.
Then the noise is present when the generator has to deliver "some more"
current, right?
I'll think your problem is in the ground path, however, same thing can
happen in the positive feeder circuit (your el. BUS system).
Check that the ground (black for most Rotax engines) is routed directly to
battery -pole (the battery ground). This is a often seen problem.
Just route your gen. ground there and make a little run up to check if the
noise still appear.
If noise still is present, noise must come from the positive side of your
el. system.
Imagine a feeder BUS, with the generator input on one side, and the
battery on the other side. All the users, light, radios etc. is hooked up
in between on this BUS.
This latter one is typical for noise created in the positive power
"feeder" line, however, in this situation we often use a big capacitor as
a "noise" filter to get read of noise from the generator system.
Just for test, -it might be wise to connect the generator output directly
to the battery positive terminal, but remember to include a circuit
breaker(or a fuse, say 15 Amp) and a generator switch.
Then you might ask, why connecting the gen. "directly" to the battery?
This because the battery is the largest el. power reservoir in the plane
and can easily blank out generator noise if it's done properly.
Good luck.
Torgeir.

I think the others who have already responded to your question have some excellent ideas. I have at least one question... What kind of noise?
A few suggestions:
1.Make sure there is a good strong grounding strap that connects the frame of the aircraft to the engine. Engine mounts are essentially insulators and control cables etc. don't make for good electrically solid ground.
2.make sure all the interconnect cables in your audio set up have the shields grounded at one end only. Grounding the cable at both ends makes a Benjamin Arnold ( to the US guys) out of your shielding. Grounding at both ends can instead of protecting from interference, actually add to interference
3. physically separate the wires of the nav lights and strobes from the wires of the audio panel. If the main wires of your audio panel and your coax is routed down the right side of the plane then route the nav light and strobe cables down the left side.
4. Try to arrange any place where the nav light or the strobe light cables have to cross the audio wires, have them cross at right angles to each other. Wires crossing at right angles have less ability to radiate or receive interference from each other. TV studios used to hire people to specifically keep their camera cables crossing at right angles to subdue interference.

I second Guy's recommendation. They had a fix that I used to keep that
exact noise from being recorded onto the video tapes I was shooting. The
fix I used was a Radio Shack kit that Bob recommended that you could either
put in the feed line to the strobe or the feed line to the camera power
(radio or intercom). I put them on camera and strobe with good result.
Regarding the wiring, I also agree with Noel's comments and wired according
to those recommendations.
As an aside, I am putting our 2004 flight of eight to Oshkosh on the
HighWing LLC website weekly video segment. http://highwingllc.com/.html
This week's one and a half minute segment has the annoying sound that
prompted the filters, near the end of the clip just before the sound, for
some reeason, goes belly up. (I rendered the video twice and got the same
result - the original video file is fine.)
To check the difference after the filter installation, click on: Flight of
eight departing Hamilton, MT. in the Archive section. The reason there is
no sound on the first Oshkosh clips is the annoying strobe sound - I
eliminated the sound track. Also for those interested, a new camera
installation has no provision for mike input so I have to record the sound
on a separate unit. Makes for major effort to get the sound syncronized.
Hence, some of the clips have no sound.
