When flying the 52 the other day, I noticed some engine roughness. Did an airborne mag check and the engine practically quit on the #1 mag. Mag checks in the past had been OK, but slightly rough.
Upon landing, took the left mag cap off, as seen from the rear, and looked at the points and found that the anvil contact side of the points was very loose. The contact side of the face is staked into a fixture and had backed out.
We restaked the contact with a bench vise using a brass crush washer to protect the contact face.
Reinstalled and runs like new. I will inspect the points again in 10 hours.
This is FYI only.

Was it a standard 4" vice, or the 6" "turbo model?

Dave,
Did you happen to take any photos of the points before you repaired them?
It would have been nice to see precisely what you had found and then how you
repaired them. Before the mag check when the engine practically quit, did
any previous mag checks either on the ground or in the air give you any
abnormal indication?
Thanks
Dennis

Dennis
Sorry, no pics. How did I know you would ask for them? Will do better. The engine runups had bee OK in the #1 position, but slightly rough. I suppose the engine was talking to me. Just not shouting. The factory staking of the contact was very rudimentary. It could be improved upon.
My suggestion is to priodically check contacts for security.

Based on what you saw, if you had a spare set of points would you say that
replacing the set would have been the correct repair?

Actually, I do have a spare set of points, but in the interest of conservation, curiosity, and no real danger we proceeded as described.
