I am working on the cockpit now and realize that it would be advantageous to have access behind the panel. I have either thought about cutting access holes or making the entire forward top skin (6C1-4) removable. What have any of you done with success? Photos would be appreciated.

Skip, here's a good site showing what you need for removable skin.

Hi Skip,
I did the complete removable forward top skin. It's been off half a
dozen times in two years.
http://www.macsmachine.com/images/largeassembly2/full/uclips.gif
I used U-nuts and J-nut type fasteners which are easier to install and
much less expensive than plate nuts with rivets.
http://www.macsmachine.com/images/canopy/full/flash&rubber.gif
6-32 screws were used on the firewall, instrument panel and the sides.
Very easy install and about 90 screws that will
not come loose in flight. As you can see, access is total and that
includes visual of the firewall inside mounts, and all wiring.
lots of daylight when you need to rewire a component.

If you need more details, don't hesitate to ask.

I've attached a beautiful Adobe Acrobat (PDF) document by Jay Bannister with his design for instrument panel access. He is active on the list so he may chime in with other information or updates.

Skip - if the attachment doesn't get through let me know and I'll e-mail it directly to your address.

Soon I too will start the panel on my 701. Long arms and legs plus old age will require easier access. On the 701 the windshield is above in the physical way but one can see and reach around, either under or over the panel. An access panel on top could be covered if the workmanship was unacceptable. What did you make of the macsmachine site? What type of fasteners would be best? I'm sure many others on the list have some good ideas.
