Question on proper list reply protocol

If you are replying on this list to a previous post, aren't you supposed to hit the "Post Reply" button, not "New Topic"?

I ask because that's the norm on every other bulletin board I've participated in. However, it seems that here some people are in the habit of responding by starting a new post with the same or similar topic. That makes it hard to follow the thread because subsequent posters don't know whether to respond to the first, second, third, or thirty-third thread with the same name. And readers can't be sure they've gotten everything in the thread because there could be more relevant stuff in other threads that are several days and several pages away.

I ask also because you only have to look back a couple of days for multiple examples of what I'm talking about. So I'm wondering if there's been a deliberate effort to establish a different norm here? If so, I'd like to know what the prevailing rule is so I can post accordingly. If not, then I really think it would be better for everyone if posters responding to an existing thread made sure they used the "Post Reply" button and only used the "New Topic" button for original posts.

Does that sound like a good idea?

Thomas

That works for people using the web version of this list but many people access this list via email. I gather that the web sight tries to keep emails grouped based on the title but some email programs use different semantics in the reply heading that defeats the forum logic.

It's kinda like herding cats, Thomas...

Actually, I think most folks on the list do a really good job of
showing courtesy to other readers and playing by the rules, but some
folks are less technically savvy than others and mistakes happen.

In this particular case, though, I think it might be an artifact of
the multi-faceted nature of the list--some folks use the web
interface, some use e-mail, and some use e-mail digests. It's
possible that the e-mail and/or digest message responses break the
web page's threads, we've had complaints about that in the past. If
that's the case, I don't know that there is an easy fix to the
problem. There is no "New Topic" or "Post Reply" functions to an
e-mailed message--they just go to a central address with a subject
line that (hopefully) ties them to the conversation.

No, it's the same. I looked at the forum and the duplication wasn't too bad.

1. There was a digest reply where the sender forgot to change the
subject, a common mistake..
2. Some idiot named Guy Buchanan split the thread TWICE. (I'm putting
him on list probation.)
3. A long title got truncated by someone's email program and split a thread.
4. Another appears to have used their originating email to generate a
reply, splitting the thread.

I think, with your reminder, people like myself will try harder to
keep the subject line connected.

I didn't see any sign of "New Topic" replies, unless people are going
to all the trouble to copy subject headings. Most of the new topics
appear to be new topics. (I didn't check them all.) The rest of the
thread splits are screw-ups of one kind or another.

Thank you very much for the notice. I expect everyone will try harder.
