I could not agree more with Jerry Painter. I have been dealing with Yaks and with Eastern Europe for longer than most - almost twenty years now, and the simple fact is that the Western Yak community has been living in a "dream-world" of incredibly cheap aircraft and spare parts.
It has of course been great while it has lasted, but I have seen, over the last few years, that stocks of spare parts in factories and airfields throughout the region are literally drying up. This is made worse by recent customs regulations in Russia, which make it almost impossible to export anything that is remotely aviation in origin even if the parts were available.
Certainly, Western ingenuity will, manufacture some spare parts, but typically those that are simple. Anything that is more complex, cannot be made without the appropriate jigs and tooling, and of course Aerostar have these.
I would emphasise I have no financial interest in Aerostar apart from a strong desire that they continue in business - because if they do not an awful lot of Yaks will eventually be grounded!
In passing, considering pricing issues, remember that Aerostar in Romania, is now part of the European Euro. Those of you who do not follow international currencies might not realise that the US Dollar has totally collapsed. Three and a half years ago it was trading at 95US cents to the Euro. Today it is pushing US$1.37cents to the Euro. Forgetting all inflationary issues, that makes an aircraft priced in Euro, which might have cost US$160,000 three and a half years ago US$231,000 today!
