Hello to the Lightning List,

My name is Bill Applegate and I live in Tucson, Arizona. On Friday, the 20th of July, I placed a deposit on a Lightning and J3300 engine. I hope to start assembling the kit in early October of this year in Marina, Arizona at Greg Hobs facility. I have a hangar at Ryan Airfield west of Tucson where I used to keep a 1979 Piper Turbo Dakota. I sold that aircraft and am looking forward to flying a much less expensive aircraft to fly and maintain.

I just turned 65 in June and my background in aviation is mostly military, Air Force. I retired in 1988, after 20 years of flying mostly fighters (FRS and A-10s). My last assignment in the Air Force was in the A-10, here at Davis-Monthan AFB. In 2003 I retired completely from other work related pursuits and am free to indulge in those things that interest me most: family, church and flying.

My intent is to build the LSA version of the Lightning. I'm working on acquiring the avionics for it now. I will be installing a glass cockpit based system using the Stratomaster Enigma. It is very reasonably priced and is very easy and inexpensive to keep current. If you would like to learn more about this extreeeeemly feature rich piece of avionics you can go to the following URL:

http://www.sportflyingshop.com/Instr/Stratomaster/Enigma/enigma.html

Additionally, I will be installing an Icom A200 radio and a Garmin GTX 327 transponder. I have a source for these with a 6 month warrantee for $1399. If you know of a better buy please let me know.

To round out the equipment list I will be installing a Tru Trak ADI Pilot 2 autopilot and a Lift Reserve Indicator. URL: http://www.liftreserve.com/

I'm looking forward to what you intend to install in your lightning and its performance and hope that we can meet at a flyin sometime with these great looking airplanes.

Best regards to all.............Bill

Hi Bill:

Great to hear that you are starting on a Lightning; best of luck to you. I just started on my Lightning and really like the aircraft. The build goes smoothly, but you will find a couple of things are slightly different than the build manual, (to be expected…).

I too am considering the Stratomaster Enigma, although I would like to try to squeeze an Odyssey in the panel if I can. It will require some creative thinking as the panel support hoop takes up a lot of space.

Jim!

Hello, Bill. You and I have much in common. I, too, live in Tucson, and Greg Hobbs helped me to build much of my Lightning. Most of my project is at home now, but I'll be moving it back in a few weeks for final assembly, paint prep, and painting. If you would like to see a Lighning under construction, just let me know. I live near Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway.

Welcome to the club.

He can give you lots of info on the design, as can several others on this
list.......many of the folks are at Oshkosh however,so it may be a week or

You are gonna' enjoy the Lightning, best to you in your build!

Hi Jim,
I too am looking at the latest from Stratomaster, the Odyssey. Any idea on cost for the unit yet? I would really like to hear about how you will make this fit and what other panel mounted equipment you plan to install. What kind of stick grips will you use and how do you see them being wired up.

Bill

Hi Bill:

I am officially on the “list” to get one. The expected delivery is in three months. My original panel design is not going to work as some of the list members had advised me. After actually seeing the panel mounting, I can see how the panel support hoop cuts down the usable space for the Odyssey.

So, I am going to move it down and over to the right some. I’ll have a new layout this week and will post it on the list.

The outfit your Lightning with Odyssey, RDACs, Magnetometer, Horiz & Vert sensors, Thermocouples, clamps, fuel flow sensors, and misc hardware will be around $4,800.00.

Jim!

Hello Bill,
Welcome to the Lightning group. I am lucky enough to have flown several different Lightnings, including the hybrid, the prototype, the new demo, and a customer build one, and I can certainly say that you have chosen a great design that is fun to fly, economical to operate, and looks like it is dong Mach 2 just sitting on the ramp. I just returned from Oshkosh and while there I had the pleasure of visiting the Lightning fiber-glass factory and I am even more impressed with the strength and integrity of the design now. Rick Disher and his crew turn out outstanding products using the latest technology. And to provide you even more reassurance, Rick is building a Lightning himself.
I would encourage you to share your building experiences with this group as you go through the processes in constructing your "jet". We can all learn through the experiences of others, so as a group we are stronger in the knowledge base it takes to produce one of these great airplanes.
Blue Skies,
Buz Rich
