We spent 2 days at Oshkosh this year, first time since 1971 (used to go
with my Dad when I was a kid) and it's still not nearly enough. I also
didn't notice any 601's or 701's on the line (we were there Monday and
Tuesday) but we spent way more time than ever in buildings, at booths
and vendors than looking at planes. Learned a lot, had a great time,
and didn't even mind the Beach Boys concert..which was way better than
I expected.
Prior to Oshkosh, we spent two days in Brodhead, WI at the Pietenpol
fly-in, where my wife managed to score two Piet rides (must be those
feminine wiles) and we took in William Wynn's Corvair seminar. As down
the road we're very slowly starting to get things together for a Piet
project (which the wife says comes AFTER the 701) which I plan to power
with a Corvair, his talk was very interesting, and I'm now even more
impressed with the man and the engine. Depending on how time for
engine decision synchronizes with more development in his 701 Corvair
project, we *just* might go Corvair in the 701 (that would make us a
household with 2 Covair powered planes, AND two Corvair cars! Talk
about parts interchangeability!)
Incidentally, I did record Williams talk at Brodhead and if anyone
would like to listen, I have an mp3 uploaded I can send you a ink
for....be advised it's just over 50 megs, so you'd probably need high
speed connection to grab it.
As for shipping costs...I've been doing mail-order as a sideline since
1978. The PO has really got me and a lot of other small mail order
business people and ebay folks torqued off. They have eliminated
surface mail rates out of the US. EVERYTHING that goes out of the
country goes at airmail rates, which of course are recently increased
as well. So, out of country buyers HAVE to pay about three times more
for shipping than they used to for the same thing. Sure, it gets there
faster, but if you're sending, say, a 20 pound amplifier to Belgium
it's gonna cost you $85 to get it there rather than about $27. Unless
of course it fits in one of two flat rate boxes. Same deal to Canada,
it all goes "air" now. So a box going to New Jersey, thousands of miles
away from me, can go for $8.95, same box to Canada goes for $21.20. I
have lots of upset customers!
