Listers,

Very recently, my earthlink spamblocker began blocking messages sent to me
from the matronics lists, but only those that I post to the lists. Everyone
else's gets through no problem. This is the sort of system where only
messages whose domain names or email addresses are in my (earthlink) address
book get through without intervention on my part. The domain name
(Matronics.com) is allowed, but something either changed with the internet
header of list generated messages or something at earthlink changed. For
those familiar with earthlink, the messages go into the "suspect email"
category, not the general spam filter.

Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas Matt?

That is an unusual problem. I haven't changed anything on the headers in recent history, but I did about a month and a half ago. Still, the changes I made shouldn't have caused the selective problem you are seeing. If you look at the headers of a message that is flagged, do you see any information regarding the Earthlink spam filter (make, model, rules that caused the blocking?)

How about setting a rule in your email program that saves a copy into your
"RV-List" folder when you send it? That way you get a copy stored locally,
and you can let your spam filter do whatever it wants to with the other
copy.

Any chance his IP has added a rule to their spam blocker that assumes
any email to him with his own email address as the source is assumed to
be from a source that's using spoofed source addresses?

Matt, I would say that was about exactly a month and a half ago that I
started seeing the problem. I don't think I posted anything for a while,
but I've posted several this past week and they are all flagged. I'll send
directly to you a copy of the internet header for this message when it gets
snagged.

Rob, these are getting snagged at the Earthlink server, not my outlook.

Several weeks ago I had many of my emails blocked by my SPAM filter
when they had worked for a long time. I had to go in and add them to my
WhiteList.

I don't have the exact date that this happened but it was in the recent
past

Rob, these are getting snagged at the Earthlink server, not my
outlook.

Yes, I know... The thought was to have Outlook just save a copy of what
you've sent to the list, *before* it leaves your computer. We're all
getting the posts to the 'list, it's just earthlink that's being silly and
preventing them getting back to you.

My solution was to keep a copy before earthlink sees it, and then let
earthlink do whatever it wants to when it comes back from the 'list.

I know, it shouldn't have to work that way, but it might be easier than
getting Earthlink to change how they block email... Smile

What I started doing was using 'formail' to clean the headers of incoming messages, leaving only "From", "Message-Id:", "Subject:", "Date:", "To:", "From:", "Cc:", and "Reply-To:".

Prior, I had been using a script that I wrote to clean the headers.

I believe the most significant difference, however, is the inclusion of the "Message-Id:" header. Prior to implementing the BBS, I was stripping this header and it was regenerated each time a message was resent. Leaving this header intact allows the BBS to properly thread topics even if the Subject lines are modified.

I'm wondering if Earthlink's spam filter is seeing the same Message-Id and assuming that someone is spoofing your original email and considers it spam...?

FYI, I had this same problem with Time Warner (Road Runner) which here in Round Rock TX is affiliated with Earthlink. I had to open an investigation report with them and they had the problem solved in three to four days...
