I usually just lurk but want to add my experience to the mix. I am a self
taught aviator. I started with about thirty years of RC building and flying
so I at least knew how and why an aircraft stayed in the air and the proper
way to land them. (well, mostly, he he) I got the bug after a flight in a
two place quick silver. Purchased a weight shift eagle and away I went. I
had a pretty clear 1800 feet of open ground in many directions so I had that
going for me. (I used up all that and more some times). I then went on to
a Cobra which was kinda three axis. This, I thought was cats whiskers. It
still took me about three months of taxiing, ground hopes (yeah, hopes) and
the like before I actually had enough talent to get flying. From there and
about two more years of playing in my backyard, I went to building my first
original kolb. Now, after all of that for about four years, you would think
I would have a handle on the situation. Well, tail wheel, long fuse, more
power, ailerons, etc., I found out how little talent I had. I catch on to
things real easily as a mechanic and can drive anything with wheels, flat or
not but this is a different picnic. I lived but gotta tell ya, had lots of
hair on some of the things that happened. I have been down hard five times
and soft a lot. I cannot tell you how many times that cuyunna quit on me.
I would NOT event consider one on a firestar. Not enough power. 447 is
about as light as I would ever go. If you push that II o II hard for any
length of time (like one minute) it is going to cook. period. Hope you
take this into account. I could not get help from anywhere when I started.
Now this list exists and you can do yourself and your going to be widow a
big favor and tell us where you are so we can help you (most, including me,
would do it for free) If not, -- I have a saying I used when someone asks
me how much to spend on an aircraft. I just say "It depends -- how long do
you plan on being dead!!". If you are near me, I will help and walk you
through everything you need to know and help set you up with training. I
dont like dead bodies laying around. If not, just let us know where you
live so we will know where to buy the parts when it is over. Please get
help. I know. I now fly a slingshot with a 582 and getting a new 912 soon
to push it. Going to have to learn my plane all over again. Sorry about
