I heard this might go away... Anyone heard anything final??

The FAA made that announcement last year. In March or April, FAA
representatives, EAA and WBA representatives met and hammered out the
changes that are due for FAA Order 8130.2f Change 3 (the current release).
That included the elimination of the 300 AND the 600 mile proficiency areas.
As to whether it will apply to all experimental exhibition aircraft
regardless of Group, we'll just have to wait and see.
