It flew. My instructor took it to the air for a 20min flight today, and he was thrilled. Flew hands off with just a little bit pitch trim, and he was very pleased with the handling . He was reporting 100mph cruise with only 2600rpm of the Jabiru 2200 engine.? (think I have to check my ASI). The weather was not that good for a test flight, it was 10knot and some rain, hopefully the weather is better in a few days, Will come back with more numbers later.

Congratulations, Geir! I am sure you'll have a lot of pleasure with
your Kitfox - Jabiru combination. I also fly at 2600 RPM on cruise but
it is more like 90 MPH. Your ASI might be slightly wrong. Going from
the Rotax 582 to the Jabiru, I noticed that the air vent under the
cowling, ahead of the firewall was creating a slight low pressure in
the cockpit and I had to put my ASI to a static port, aft on the
fuselage. Maybe you could check that. Another thing is that maybe your
prop has a coarser pitch than mine. What is you static WOT RPM on the
ground? Anyway, with my model 3, 100 MPH is the Vne so I am very happy
cruising at 90 MPH.
Cheers,

The static rpm is 2950 (it is not the best choice propeller on this
engine/airframe) but I will test if for a while.
|
I think that 2950 is right in the bullseye, Geir, and if you cruise faster than me, it can be one of two reasons:
1) Your indicated air speed is not your real air speed. You may need a static port line, or
2) Your model IV is more streamlined than my model III.
I'll contact you privately regarding us meeting in Norway.
Cheers,
Michel Verheughe

PS: I've just got a note from a veterinary opthamologist asking me to - please stop aiming for the bullseye! - but ... okay, okay I'll shut up!

Michel,
The wing on the model IV-1200 has the new faster airfoil, vs the draggier
undercambered (Avid) airfoil used on the model 1-3 Kitfox. So I wouldn't be
surprised to know the IV will cruise 10 mph faster.
Congrats on your test flight Geir! Nice looking airplane that sounds like
it should ba real screamer!

I believe that Geir also reported that he was flying a Speedster wing which would be faster still.
