Hi there,

Does anyone have any information on where/how to manufacture or buy and install sighting devices on Yak-55M? I recently bought the Yak-55M looking to add sighting devices to it.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Kirill

I am also interested. Although I think most people just make them, I
do not think there is a standard one. I have photos of several
different ones if you want to look at some options.

Hi guys,

I'd also like to know what you find out on the sighting device.

Right now I'm planning on making one; I'll post when I do, and if you haven't found one by then, I could make a couple extra ones.

Dick Blatter, somewhere in mid-west (Illinois?) is who I remember getting mine from. I'll look further to see if I can find an invioice. Sorry I don't have more now.
Respectfully, Rick b

Herb, Mike --

Would you be able to post the designs of the sighting devices that you are working on and/or have seen on the Yak-55s? I'm trying to scope out my options and decide what makes sense to do..

thanks,
Kirill

Has anyone had any experience with using pin striping tape on the side of the canopy for sighting attitude angles?

I have seen this, and sat in a pits with it.  My first impression the focal length of my eyes is such that I cannot find a happy medium. Either the horizon or the tape is way out of focus.  By putting a sighting device on the wing farther out it is easier to "look through" the device and see the horizon.  Or look at the device   and see the horizon in the distance.
Maybe I just need to admit I need bifocals Sad

I am not currently building anything. I have some photos of some that I could forward if you like.

I was just using this in a Pitts for some aerobatic refresher
training. (I haven't flown much acro for about 5 years and felt it
would be a good idea to have a good instructor help me knock the rust
off.) I know what you are saying in that, the tendency is to focus
your eye on the horizon which makes the tape go out of focus. I found
that I adapted very quickly and using it to determine pitch angle
relative to the horizon was not a problem.

OTOH, something no one has mentioned but is probably significant is
setting a lateral sight-point on the horizon. If you have a sighting
device out on the wing tip it will help you identify yaw when
horizontal or roll when vertical.

(Sorry, bifocals won't help because the tape and the horizon are in
the same plane.)

Bifocals will not help. Even with multifocal lenses, you can only focus at one distance at a time. Putting the sighting device on the wing tip moves it far enough that the eye considers it at infinity. Then the eye can focus on the sighting device and the horizon at the same time.
