That's a very expensive prop, but looks very very cool. Are you referring
to the 3-blade composite prop?

Patrick - Don't go there. The Hartzell guys were evasive at Arlington
and downright rude at OSH. They want $27,000 for the three blade
composite which is now Type Certificated for the Cirrus SR-22 G2 and G3.
Which by the way runs on a Continental IO-550N or TSIO-550 from Tornado
Alley.
Several airshow performers have a more robust composite three blade on
IO-540s running higher compression pistons at upward of $35,000.
Their official answer, "Hah, If you want a three blade Hartzell for the
IO-540 then get VAN to personally request it otherwise.... Its not for
sale on kitbuilts to individual builders".
I came away licking my wounds and swearing that Deems and those who have
gone with AeroComp and an American Propeller three color finished paint
job have chosen wisely. If necessary, I kept their business cards in my
"Do not ever frequent business with these guys". Just my opinion.
Their two blade aluminum scimitar is the best you can get for the RV-10
if you want to climb slower (1700 fpm) and have VANS blessing.

Jessie, I don't know if Hartzell make a composite propeller, I suspect
that their's would be metal. I think you might be referring to the MT
three-bladed propeller?
I don't know about the 'cool' aspect Jessie, but would rather gain an
increase in climb performance and an increased ground to propeller tip
blade clearance. We have a predominance of unsealed Authorised Landing
Areas (ALA's) here in Australia and stones play havoc with our
propellers. Going to a shorter propeller would be very advantageous.

I didn't know one could purchase the three bladed carbon Hartzell (one used
on the turbo cirrus). I asked the rep at the AOPA convention and was told
(unofficially- but honestly)that they were expensive; at the time, only
being used "custom" for the Cirrus; and that there was no real advantage
anyway to the blade for a RV-10 versus the 2 blade. "Advantage" being
performance and weight was slightly better than the 2 blade but he couldn't
justify the additional costs when there were other composite 3 blades that
were far less expensive anyway.

Thanks John. Price is an obvious barrier and when applied against
benefits, it looks like the standard two-bladed affair will have to
suffice, unless as you indicated, the AeroComp or American propeller
options are pursued. I'll just have to take care with the stones!
Thanks for your prompt replies gents.

Patrick;
Your subject line states "Three Bladed Hartzell", we are all responding
accordingly. There is indeed a three bladed carbon reinforced blade,
http://www.airframer.com/news_story.html?release=796 and Jesse is right , it
is cool!
Don't confuse this with the MT composite blade. The cost is more in the 8-9K
range for that blade after one gets it from Germany and assembled.

Paul Grimstad did quite a discussion with AeroComp on blade repair and
leading edge replacement for exactly your issue. I think Paul is now
sold on Aero Composites but then he will have to respond.

This blade was specifically designed for the GA market but that means
certificated (TCDS) manufacturers, not for Experimental Kit Built -
hence the brusk treatment.
They said ask VAN to request it or go away. I suggest we ask VAN to
supplement the MT choice for three blade composite choice.

Correction, the second engine choice was a Turbo-Normalized TNIO not the
TSIO as I unfortunately typed too fast.
I have several pictures of multi color blade paint schemes which can
match airframe designs if readers want to consider an AeroComposite.
Visit Deems site for his specific finish.
Hartzell makes a great two blade metallic but I find value in three and
the dampening effect of composite. The replaceable nickel leading edge
and ability to correct rock chips is a big consideration.
Wouldn't it be a perfect world if VANS would offer the Hartzell 3 blade
composite to RV-10 builders??

I don't know if this is just for testing or actually available for
customers, but I saw the 3-blade Hartzell on an IO-540 Maule, I believe,
when I went to visit the factory recently. It definitely is the coolest
looking prop I've seen on a small plane, but for 3 times the MT price and 4
times the Hartzell 2-Blade metal blade price, I don't see it being used a
whole lot on RV-10's or Maule's, even if it does become available, although
some would likely fork over the cash to have something that "special".
