Hello:

I am planning a long cross country, and would like to video parts of it.
I do not have any idea, what Video recording to use, or how is used.

Which is the least expensive one, and how easy is to do this while flying.

Any way to sit it on the glare shield, and shoot what you want?

( I have seeing some videos that are posted, some look real nice.
One question
on this, it takes a long time for me to load this videos even if is only a few
seconds long,, Do I have to buy some program or hard ware, to be able to load
this videos, quickly? but I digresse)

Any information is appreciated...

It's hard to buy a "bad" camcorder these day. Stick to the major players from the major stores and you'll be fine.

One thing to make sure of is whether it can take video **INPUT** from another camera (like a bullet cam) if you wish to do that later.

Some are models are not capable.

I recommend any camcorder with a hard drive. Changing miniDV's and dvd's is a pain in the butt not to mention dvd's take a long time to finalise. I have a Sony with a 30 GB hard drive and it can hold 20 hours worth of recordings. It is quick on and off, has great zoom, great video quality also takes great pictures and sound quality is great for a cheap camcorder.(About $300)
Sony DCR-SR40 now replaced by DCR-SR42.

Ravi,
How difficult is it to find a particular segment of video in 20 hours of recording?

Dale,
It creates a new clip each time you start and stop. When you scroll thorough the clips it shows you a photo of the start of the clip so you can tell at a glance the contents of each segment. you can touch it and it will start playing the segment followed by the next segment in sequence.  You can fast forward/rewind/skip segments just like in a DVD player.
Ofcourse once you download to your computer you can do all sorts of stuff to it. Like editing, merging etc.

Camcorders with hard drives have drop protection, this shuts off the recording easily in turbulence. My JVC has both hard drive and SD card, I select the SD card for recording in the plane AND I have to turn off the drop protection. If I don’t turn off  the drop protection it will stop recording with the smallest bump, even though the hard drive is not in use. When downloading the SD card to your computer when not in the camera use of a USB converter speeds the upload by about 400 percent.
Happy recording,
Dale
