Kitfoxers.................I gotta question.........
With all the messages about proper and safe firewall transition, it got me ti thinking. (Dangerous!)
I didn't build my Kitfox....Too dang old..........So I'm not too knowledgeable in the building process.
Why do all of the Kitfoxes that I've seen have the insulation blanket on the engine side of the firewall instead of the cockpit side of the firewall? Every GA plane that I've owned or seen, the insulation is always on the cockpit side, which makes sense to me. On the engine side, it's exposed to engine fluids and eventually over time, it's possible for engine fluids to gather in the padding. That could pose a fire hazzard.
There's probably a logical answer to my query, but I not going to tax what's left of my brain cells, trying to answer the question. I'll let someone else's brain cells work on this.

Herbert,
I too struggled with the firewall blanket, and installed mine on the inside. It looks better there and is not a fire problem. The ones I have seen on the inside collect oil and dirt and wrinkle up from heat after a while. I did not place my firewall in the pocket either, but used a rubber seal.

Blasphemy to challenge the factory design!!
IMO, Your observations are right on. Padding on the engine side. Really a bad idea IMO. Its a lot of work to put it on the other side. Leave it off and you will be happy like a lot of others. I bet you can remove it without to much trouble. I did not even buy the padding. Several of my buddies just threw the padding away. The consensus was that it served no purpose. Wont make the plane quieter, insignificant change in the heat load.
Without the padding there may be an issue of sealing the firewall to the cowl,?? Nobody I know had a problem improvising a good seal.

The firewall thing can be beat to death, but, you still have fiberglass cowlings and fabric. We did have one of our fox’s with an in flight fire a few years ago. I wonder if he is still on the group to talk a little.

Guys:
I got this earlier this evening from Dave Herron who is I believe restoring a model II in NS. I hope some one around here or the other site will be able to help.
FYI canultra is a Canadian ultralight group.
Noel,
Do you know any homebuilders in central Nova Scotia?
kitfox or Volksplane
I am on an ugly internet connection and its too hard to surf those sites.
I had a contact with VW plane guy somehwere near valley or Annapolis...BTW it got lost on my system back home.
We are here near Greenwood Airport for a few days. So if you can put a holler on canultra or kitfox sites for contact it might help out.
The comments about Sub help me long range planning. TX
Please RSVP to;

My Yahoo is aup to five minutes to never, then why am I using it - my canultra comes thru on it...

My Model IV had the insulation on the cabin side of the firewall, but
I did not use the factory-supplied blanket. Instead, I used a thick,
dense, fire-resistant foam that was glued to the firewall in sections
between the steel tubes. I don't know if it helped with noise much
because these little 'foxes are the noisiest things I've flown, but
it looked really nice and I liked it.

My plane has the blanket on the outside of the firewall and shag (not that shag:-)) carpet on the inside. I haven't flown it with out the padding but I can say when I open the door the sound is very loud. Flying without headphones isn't uncomfortable either. It certainly isn't as loud as the C172 I trained in.
This winter I have a 912 to install and I was thinking about removing the outside blanket and possibly spraying it with something like Rhino liner to help transmit heat from the engine compartment to the cockpit.

Mine has the factory blanket. with the firewall installed in the pocket so that padding is on both sides. It's neat and easy to clean off. It's been about 300 hours in flight and it has held up. I don't see any reason to go looking for alternatives.

I installed my firewall blanket on the cabin side of the firewall,
after first cutting off the part that forms a pocket, into which the
firewall would have slid. I did this after talking with Frank at
Skystar. I cut holes where the pads are located, so that the material
would not be squeezed between the pads and the engine mount.
I agree with you about the padding eventually becoming soaked with
oil/whatever.

I don't know, Noel, perhaps your hearing was better back then.
