It would be more simple safe and easy to drill all the way through the tube and engage a K1000-6 nutplate. It would be a lot less esthetic but the ugly nutplates could be camouflaged by dressing up the tube with a split rubber hose to cover it from underneath. A big advantage of a nutplate is its locknut action allowing you to have it hold tight without tightening the screw hard against the plexiglass.
