I ended up with a reversing prop when I re-engined a SeaBee I rebuilt. It is VERY useful for docking. The most useful thing is the ability to get very close to zero thrust right before you enter Beta for close quarters. You can also impress the natives by backing up from the gas pump!!.

One of the reasons I've stayed away from flying boats is the docking issue related to the tip floats. Just can't pull up to any old dock like you can with floats especially in a wind. Is this maybe why reversing props are more common on this type of aircraft?
