Just got back home from a 1300 mile round trip drive to Shelbyville TN where Jabiru USA put on an engine maintenance and repair seminar. Many helpful little tidbits came out in addition to the expected technical education on totally reassembling a 3300 engine from individual parts. Pete Krotje and his staff have had to resolve a lot of engine screw ups over the years and they shared many of those "Don't do this because this (holding up a broken engine part) will be the result" stories with the class.
This was the first of two seminars there for me. I will be heading back there next month for a seminar on installing a 3300 on a Zodiac 601XL, which is what I will be doing very soon. My point is that having spent some time with Pete, Nick Otterback, and Mark Stauffer at the seminar left me with a good feeling about being able to work with them into the future. I'd recommend that anyone who is running a Jabiru engine and can make it to Tennessee for one of these seminars should go for it. The area is fun and interesting (not the least of which is the Jack Daniels Distillery in nearby Lynchburg, TN), the folks are friendly and love anything airplane related, and it is always easier to get through a problem with someone you know rather than with someone you have only written to or phoned.
Now, once I get a bit caught up on putting out fires in the camp back here at home, it's back to working on wiring the Zodiac.

I must add my kados to Eds. The seminar was excellent. Took many of the mysteries out of the jab engine. The seminar is a must for anyone who is even thinking about the jab as the power for his project. If you are thinking of any other engine, before you buy, check out the seminar. $300 is a lot less of a mistake than $15000. I know now that I made the right choice.

Al, how are you doing? I have not seen any thing from you in a while. Is you XL up and flying again ? I went up to David Cotton's hanger a couple of months ago to help him, but haven't heard anything about his progress since. I try to fly my XL every weekend, but it's down to about every other week now as my efforts on building this RV-8A is consuming my time. Best regards, Bill

Hi Bill- Good to hear from you. My XL is ready for flight. At least in a few days. I had serious problem with the engine over the summer. Couldn't get above 1800 RPM. Finally I took the engine back to JabUSA and they found that it had been set out of timing when they tore it down after my "incident". I just got it re installed and the prop on it yesterday. I adjusted the valve lifters and it ran like crazy. Had it up to 2950 RPM just for a short few seconds and I couldn't hold it with the brakes. Hope the first flight will be next week. I heard you were building a RV. How is that experience compaired to the XL? My next one if I can ever afford it will be either an RV or one of Pete Krojes' Lightnings. Best regards- Al Do Not Archive

Al, sounds like your 3300 will be a demon in the air! I went by the airport last evening to pick up my headsets for some maintenance and found an oil puddle under the cowl. Oh Hell! something else to fix!. I didn't have the heart to take the cowl off and see what it was, maybe this weekend. Yes I'm building an RV-8a and about to finish up on the fuselage. Have the wings and tail completed and just received the rest of the kit for finish work. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it's still damned small and dim. Ha. You can compare the XL to the RV, but in so many ways you have to learn different skills in sheet metal work. Initial assembly is easier with pre punched holes, but solid riveting and the process to get each piece ready is much more demanding. That and so much of an RV assembly requires two folks while as you know you can build an XL mostly by yourself. Also everything is much thicker and stronger. The 8a is a Sherman tank compared to the XL. I hope to hear about a super second first flight real soon and good luck! Bill
