Aileron Horn Clearance?

Hi guys,

In final assembly of my right wing, I'm noticing that with the aileron mounted, the aileron control horn just barely clears the bottom flange of the rear channel when the aileron is in the down position. It's a little too close for comfort with me, so here are my questions:

1. Roughly how much space should be between the horn and the bottom flange of the rear channel. Right now, mine is 1-2mm.

2. Am I worrying about nothing because in normal opertion the horn will never travel that far? There is an aileron stop, so that leads me to believe that the horn will travel that far in normal operation.

If it turns out to be too close I can just make another horn and mount it at a slightly different angle to provide more clearance (which is probably what I'll do anyway for peace-of-mind), I was just curious if anyone else had experienced this.

Thanks!

Yes it will, everytime you do a "runup" and check for "full free travel" of the control surfaces. You know the accronym, CIGAR. C-controls, I-Ignition, G-gas, A-altitude and attitude, R- runup. Bob U.

Mine touched the flange, so I moved the flange locally. Have about 3mm clearance now.

I hooked mine up for the first time a few weeks back and it also contacts the lower flange. I have not resolved it yet, but like Ron, I will do some local area modification to get it to fit. If I had to do it again, I would rotate the aileron arm up a bit. If I don't like what I will need to do to modify the local area, I might just put news arms on, but moved up a bit.

Good luck,

Thanks for the replies guys. It's nice to know it's not just me. That's one of the things I like about this list. It makes me feel like I'm not building in a vacuum.

Since I'm scratchbuilding and it's simple for me to make more parts, I think my solution is going to be to drill out the old horn and fabricate a new one to replace it with. This time I'll change the angle slightly to allow for a few millimeters clearance. Seems like a picky thing, but in the interest of risk management it's worth doing right.

Thanks again for the input.
