|

Folks,
My interest is piqued from the recent banter over Yak-50 wing spar
issues. So my hope is to enlist the collective wisdom so as to provide
actual historical facts on Yak wing spar failures. My belief is this
information will also be relevant to Yak 52 owners as well. Especially early models without the "Heavy spar".
Correct me if I wrong, but my understanding is that there were three
Yak 50 aircraft that were lost due to the wing spar failure. These
aircraft were all lost practicing for the World Aerobatic Competition. One
of the pilots got out, and I was told it was a female pilot.I also
believe all of these aircraft were pre-spar mod. Warning! This is a
rumor: I have been told by IMHO, by a respected Yak-50 driver, that one of
these Russian pilots admitted to pulling/pushing far more then the
+9/-6 the aircraft were designed for during this. more in the neighborhood of 14G's positive. So with this said, I
wonder what happened to the design overshoot that was built in.
We all know that we can destroy almost any aircraft by abusing it in
the air. Also with repetitive abuse comes the issue of metal fatigue, well noted.
Nothing lasts forever, and some go sooner rather then later. The Yakovlev engineers found this out with the Yak-50, sooner
then they thought, I suspect. Their response was legendary. My guess
was to save face for the design bureau and country, after the loss of the aerobatic team pilots that were considered national hero's, or at least potential national hero's. The reaction to permanently ground and destroy these aircraft, obviously was viewed as an over reaction my many. BTW was there not a Sukhoi wing failure as well? Was it
something about a cold lamination when the wing was made?
Personally, I have been only involved with the Yak aircraft for less
then 5 years, so needless to say, I still learning. This list is one of
the best tools there is to enhance the experience, and I can not say enough to the people who provide
informative, useful information to this community. For the last three
years or so, I have been enjoying flying the Yak-50, which I bought from
Steve Culp. So I do have a dog in the hunt, so to speak.
So my burning question is, can someone shed actual facts on all the known Yak-50
aircraft that folded their wings? What say you? Victor,
Sergei,Vladimir,Svetlana, any people who know the true facts, please
feel free to educate me. Also I'm curious if there has been any Yak-52 aircraft lost due to wing failure.
Thanks in advance, I value virtually all of the opinions on the list.
