I like the way your plane floats nice and high! Judging by the way it is sitting in the water the CG looks as far forward as you would want with no weight in it. ( perfect )

During the summer months I install, with Coraseal, a 2" I.D. pvc tube on the struts on the pilots side.... A fellow got to have a place to put his fishing rod without all that setting up and breaking down. I just slide the rod in the tube from the front and wind holds it in place.

Judging by the way it is sitting in the water the CG
Quote:

The CG seems to be good for flight per weight and balance but when I'm on the water I sometimes get water
splashing over the bows. Not sure if the bow wave is unusually large because of the open cavity for the
nose gear or what. This winter I will move the floats ahead 2"-3" and see if that helps. That should put
my cg right at the forward edge with 170 lbs pilot, everything added from there moves the cg rearward.

Thanks for everyones kind comments.

Before moving the floats forward try flying close to gross..... When you move the floats forward you may find the slow speed envelope may not be as good as it is now. Keeping the nose up for landing may become a bit more difficult.

Thanks for the input Noel but adding weight to get near gross moves my cg rearward.
Wouldn't it make more sense to fly it at the other end of the envelope (light)? The
other option I would have would be to install the series 7 elevator which would also
allow me to move the cg further forward. Is my thinking backwards? I'll be honest, I
didn't graduate in the top 20% in my class!

I'm Assuming that at gross weight your airplane is still well within CG
limits as it is now.

In my model III-A the CG moves back the same as your plane. The more gas I
put in, the more weight in the seats, the more weight in the floats and the
more weight in the storage compartment the further back the CG moves. My
plane seems to land pretty well 50 to 100 lb below gross. And when I get
close to empty tanks it still has plenty of elevator authority to do nice
landings (straight floats).

I figured I should mention it to you because I have noticed on the forum
several posts about not enough nose up authority to land tail wheel first (
very nose high) in some aircraft.

Noel

Thanks Greg, They are model 1650A's. Not very common on Kitfox models I assume it is because of the weight, about 320 lbs. I'll have the airplane on my beach all weekend so pictures should be coming soon!

Kevin, I have been test flying my Classic 4 with the CG near the forward limit. I must admit that my landings with the CG foreword have not been great. The tail does not come down well when I flare to touch down.

Any weight added moves the CG back and the past few flights I have secured sand bags in the baggage and in the passenger seat. I was amazed at how well it three pointed with the CG just a little over one inch further back.

Be aware that I first first tried a few stalls with and without flaps at altitude so I would know what to expect. I like my Kitfox more each time I fly it!

I have had no issues with elevator authority so far and have also been
experimenting with different configurations and speeds at altitude. There
have been a few comments on the list regarding the inability to get the tail
down on landing and I believe some have solved this with gap seals and/or
micro vg's on the tail. Mine has not flown without the floats and probably
will not. If I could find a good deal on a partially completed
project.....0290.....bushwheels......You are correct in pointing out the
fact that our Kitfoxes are more fun with each flight.

With a 914, your plane is somewhat unique. One thing about my Aerocets 1100's is that the plane feels under floated. Others have made the same comment. That is probably why there is so much interest on the forum in your setup. We are always looking at alternatives.

I'll be happy to answer any questions I can. If you go to the sportflight.com site, you can see my previous kitfox on aerocets amphibs. I believe Paul S. listed it under misc. It is a model IV with a 912. White with red and silver stripes. It now lives in North Dakota.

Gary did you notice how high his plane seemed to float empty? The sterns of the floats were completely out of the water. Looks like a lot more floatation than the Aerocets
