I am building my plane in my backyard. I am just reaching the point where I will be putting the body on stands. I was wondering if I can mount the engine with it on stands or if I need to move it to the driveway to mount the landing gear first?
Airplane will not fit thru gate with landing gear attached.
Any thoughts?

I loaded a fuselage on its gear into the back of a truck when the opening
was too narrow by angling it, "hooking" first one gear leg and then the
other. Will that work with your gate or is there no room to maneuver near
the gate?
Also without the engine on the fuselage is light enough to just pick up and
lift over the gate.

Jay B has mounted his engine without the fuselage being on the gear.
I would suggest that you do the required fitting of the gear because, at least with mine, it required several "on and off" evolutions. I'd hate to think of doing it with 200 lbs of engine on front.

Jay B also had his gear fabbed and fitted to the fuselage before mounting the engine. He fitted the gear by raising and lowering the gear for fitting, not raising and lowering the fuselage. He will do the same when installing the gear. The gear is not installed because of space limitations in the construction "hanger." (Garage) You could probably do the same.
