I have a Airmap 100 since 2001. I tried to order the update and was
told that there were no longer any updates for the unit.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Jimmy,

Regarding no more updates, yes, that's what I experienced when I tried to update my old Garmin 95XL. They said the update was FREE, but it was also the LAST!!
For obvious reasons, the GPS manufacturer's get to a point where they don't want to invest any time and efforts toward an old and outdated model. Newer models most certainly receive better, have more features, and ususally include color displays (and make them more money). And color can really enhance a GPS's usability, especially in the aviation world, where the displayed picture can indicate rivers, lakes, mountains, and Special Use Airspace rings. On the very high-end GPSes, the color can augment safety by showing the terrain that is a danger to fly toward.
On the finer models of GPS, an overhead view of your position can indicate RED for the terrain "at & above" you. Obviously, if you continue flying toward a red area, you will be the main "guest of honor" at a rescue party!

One of the really great things about GPS, is that there are so many models, with so many functions. Truly, a person can find the best unit to suit his or her needs. GPS units span the spectrum of display information.
I, for one, don't need a model that displays weather. The kind of flying I do, I can SEE the weather. John H. says he really likes the "airport information" available on his Garmain 196., etc., etc.

But, from your question regarding no more updates, one thing is fairly certain, if a person buys an older model, it's days are definitely numbered to get future updates.

The 100 and 300 are orphans, although Lowrance gave me a $250 rebate
when I gave them the serial number of my 300. If you want to trade up
you might see if they're still offering rebates and if the 100 is
covered.

Cryptic comment on the need to have terrain info in your GPS. The
sectional for you locale will have that information as well as the
highest obstacle in any given block on the sectonal. If you use that
and a good scan while aviating, what's the need for a chip upgrade.
