Hi,,,

I’m going nuts as to which Cj6 out there to buy. There are so many available for sale.

Question,, how realistic is it to count on the 1000tbo on the housai?

It depends on if it is first-run or third-run. A first-run Huosai
that is run here in the US with an oil filter and modern oils will
easily go past 1000 hours.

Mike,
Understand that unless otherwise stated in the logs a "overhaul" is
really only a "top" with a inspection of the lower end. So with that in
mind:
New engine =0 TT
First overhaul = 0 since overhaul 500 TT
Second overhaul =0 since overhaul 1000 TT
Third overhaul = 0 since overhaul 1500 TT

So if you have a third overhaul with say 300 hours since overhaul
(1800TT on the lower end) I think it might be wishful thinking to expect
a stock engine to run another 800 hours to a TT of 2600 hours (on the
bottom end). All that being said your chances of reaching those numbers
will be much better with the installation of a good 10 micron oil
filter, oil analysis, and good maintenance.

Always Yakin,
Doug

I have what we think is a third-run Housai and without the oil filter mod and it's still going strong at 1,300+ hours (knock on wood). Although I've changed out a lot of valves.

Yep, that can happen. Should I or shouldn't... So what is it you really want, a Project, someone else's Showplane or something in between? Don't worry about the engine as long as it has a documented pedigree. Huosai or or M-14P. What really matters is a straight airframe with good landing gear and pneumatics.

If I were doing it all over again, I'd start with something more than a completely unrestored airframe...and I'd look for those expensive extras, such as radio, transponder, intercom, good glass, with 1 or more parachutes thrown in. A new pair of Strong Squadron seat packs will set you back at least $2800 with shipping, more with extras like lumbar support, monogram, etc. Hooker Harness' are good too.

Don't worry about fancy glass panels, you will sort all that out once you start flying. Extended fuel is nice, but how often do you need to thaw your butt out? My skinny butt needs a break at 2 hours or so, well within stock capability. I built my own aft aux tank for those occasional trips where I got free fuel. What really would sell me is a completely stripped airfarme with no paint, where I can see every Boo-boo in the skin and put my own paint on.

The M-14P is really a kick butt climber, but $30K in conversion costs only bought 5-15 knots in cruise, depending upon altitude, temps and cosmic rays.
