Hi guys,
I dont want to take up too much of your time because I havnt started building yet. After years of "research" (drooling over kit planes on the internet) I am absolutley stricken by the 701 and there is no doubt its what i want to build. I cant believe I never saw it before!
I have read through your entire forum and you guys are a terrific support to each other and I have learned much by reading your posts. Im going to have a thousand questions but for now just a couple.
Since I have definately decided on scratch building the 701 Ive been keeping my eyes open for tools. A friend of mine has got a used tools place and he has a nice little 24" brake for sale for $125. Its really heavy duty and easily modified for the 1/8" bend radius.
So the question... is it big enough to be of any use in a 701 project?
What is the maximum size bend I will need to make?
Any one near Maine?
Nice to meet you all and I'm sure you will be hearing from me soon. I going to get my plans and DVDs soon to study over the winter and make my first materials order in the spring. I just cant stop thinking I should have bought that brake!
Thanks,
Joshua Gurley
Thanks.

Hi Joshua, welcome to the group. I am also building a
CH-701 from scratch. Great project!!! Personally, I
think that you would not get a whole lot of use from a
24" brake. There is not a lot of bending that will
fit that short of a unit.
A better bet would be to take a look at the simple
brake designs on ch-601.org or ch-701.com. Also look
into the Dave Clay 8 ft break. I would build one
myself but have made do with my own design for a 5
footer for the most part. That and a couple of trips
to the local A&P shop that is friendly to homebuilders
to bend the few parts that were too long for my own.
Best o luck with your project, I've had a blast so
far. I'm about 75% done and might see the sky
sometime next summer if work would leave me at home
long enough to work on it.

Hi Joshua!
Welcome to the group, glad to have another builder on board.
The longest bend you will need to make is the horizontal stab spar which around 7'.
I recommend you meet up with your local EAA and become a member. The wealth of knowledge in the
organization is amazing and the resources that become available as you meet new friends will help
with specialized tools. I've flown the demo at Zenith and was amazed of the capability of this
airplane. The visibility was the best ever, besides an old Bubble Bell helicopter.
I too am beginning to scratchbuild the 701 after a long undecisive battle of time vs
money vs quality. I purchased the rudder from Zenith and it's almost done. While building the
rudder I decided that I require a certain level of perfection which I could not see it the parts.
Nothing against Zeinth or any builder out there working on the kit just rather my personal
standards and requirements.
Anyway its good to here we will be entering the journey at the same time.
There is an abundance of resources online I would start at Jon Croke's site here:

Thanks for all of your replies. I'll leave the 24" brake alone and just build a Dave Clay brake.
I've been in and around a lot of lists and I must say this one is tops. There is just so much info and support available its amazing. I had completely dismissed aluminum construction after researching the Bearhawk last year because it just seemed so complicated and beyond my abilities. After spending the last few months studying Zenith planes I feel like I could practically build my 701 with just the information available on-line!
It will be a while but I cant wait to get started.
Thanks again. I'll be back!
Joshua
