Ladies and Gents;

I just attended a seminar on how to crash your aircraft and survive. I would

recommend it to all. It did bring up some questions, i.e., Has anyone

addressed the best way to tie down cargo in the baggage area of the 601? The

rear area of the baggage compartment is hard to reach -- so the webbing

would have to be permanently attached to the tie downs??? What is the best

way to secure these tie-downs so they don't pull out of their holes upon

impact? Are there any recommended nets?

 This certainly doesn't address all your questions but here are some forward  tiedowns I made on-the-cheap from rings purchased in the Osh flymart.  In  the rear of the compartment I have the Van's tiedowns.  Both are removable  but the forward ones leave a flat floor.

Good question Mack. You need a net or canvas anchored into something more  than sheet metal. Such as the longerons. Around the Pensacola, FL area we are  able to go to any of the sail makers, etc around here and they can whip  up a net that would work well. This restraint must be good for 26  G's at 40 lbs to keep a laptop or six pack from whacking you. Do you remember  the "Mythbusters" episode on this? I was trained and served in this field in the  military. Many civil and military aircraft have tie down rings that are 1.75  inch dia made of 1/4 inch seamless stock anchored with eye bolts. I have a dozen  rings on hand, but without the eye bolts and clevis pin that makes up the  assembly. They are rated for 750 lbs each, and will pull out of a sheet  metal floor at about that loading if not anchored with a good backing.  These are yours if they can help. I will search West Marine in town for even  better hardware for my project. 

 Another important factor is that the shoulder harness passes through the  area of the cargo restraint and would interfere. If the harness is attached  behind and below the level of the shoulders, that would be bad. It must go  over the shoulder, then upward at 15 to 20 degrees before attaching in the  rear. This is to prevent injury in a head on. I have seen cadaver tests (leaving  your body to science, are you?) that clearly demonstrate this in head on crash  tests. The test subject was strapped into a pilot's seat with a 4  point restraint. Xrays showed two broken collar bones. If you can find a picture  of an RV-8 pilot seat, examine this aspect for yourself.

 I have some ideas for a simple anchor system, but I need to study the  cockpit area when its clecoed together. Its sort of jumping of the drawings  at me now but not that well yet. Know what I mean?
