Hi folks
Am wanting to use the cigarette lighter outlet in my shrike to plug in my mobile phone adapter etc.
Anyone know off the top of their head whether the output from the outlet is 12 or 24 volts?

So I was getting on Utube to watch a couple of Wolfmother (awesome band, think Led Zeppelin meet Old Ozzy) videos, and this was on the front page. I was intrigued, so I watched it and it really is as easy as you think it is going to be.

Mine is definitely 24 volts as I cooked a DVD player that stated not to plug into 24v.

I fly an AC-68 (Commander 680 FLP) and have a cigarette plug extension for the boss so he can use his phone charger from his seat. I don't know if the lighter socket is 12 or 24 volts but I think phone chargers adapt to a variety of voltages. We have no problem in our plane.

Good Evening Robert and anyone else who may have occasion to use a cigarette lighter plug for powering other devices.
I have no idea how things are done in various Aero Commanders, but Beechcraft has done a couple of things that could be confusing to a Baron pilot.
The early Barons had a large resistor in the cigarette lighter circuit that was supposed to have about the same resistance as the lighter which was to be heated. That allowed a twelve volt lighter to be used.
If you checked the voltage with no load, you would read twenty-four volts. If you plugged in a twenty-four volt device that required a fair amount of current, it would get much less voltage. The voltage, of course, being a balance between the current required by the unit and the current shed by the larger resistor.
Ohm's Law and all that stuff.
If you plugged in a very low draw device such as a phone charger, it received almost the full twenty-eight volts that would be supplied by the alternators or generators. On later airplanes, Beech has taken out the resistor and found a source for twenty-eight volt cigarette lighters.
Be careful what voltage IS available and be sure to check to see whether or not AC ever tried to do the same thing Beech did with the early Barons!

Check it with a volt meter, then you will know. I put a 24V to 12V converter in my 500A and wired the socket to that, it works fine.

Good Evening Jim,
In addition to using a voltmeter, you could check the feed line for resistance. If there has been a dropping resistor installed, the voltage will not be a true indication. The other way to check would be to check with a substantial load applied.

I have just installed a 28VDC to 13.5VDC converter that will handle 18 amps. All five outlets in the cabin and cockpit will be supplied by that unit.

Good Morning Tom,
Since I have the same sort of unit in my twenty-four volt Bonanza, I think that is a great idea!
It is probably a good idea to clearly label the outlets as to their voltage though.
However, I have one twelve volt and one twenty-four volt outlet in the cockpit area. Labeling may not be as important if all are the same.
